Given the urgency of the #climatecrisis there is still too much "normal" going on, including in conversations in our daily lives. To help solve the #climatecrisis we have to be willing to bring it up even when it's awkward/uncomfortable. Don't ignore the elephant in the room.

What do folks actually *gain* from having more NeurIPS papers? I could certainly write more papers - but if correctness alone is the standard, what's the point? Whether in industry or academia, hiring committees are only going to look at my best 1-2 papers. What am I missing?

It will be incredibly hard to dismantle the fossil fuel industry, end consumerism, eradicate billionaires, overhaul agriculture, strengthen our communities & transform how we live, work & what we eat. But not impossible. And if we don't do all these things most of us will die.
Did you know the fossil fuel industry has actively funded economic theory? Remember, neoliberalism would be nothing without petroleum. Listen to my full conversation with @amywestervelt tomorrow. Subscribe at PlanetCritical.com

LLMs as function approximators, looks like an interesting course
Another class I'm teaching this semester is "Programming w/ LLMs". This sidesteps the whole chatbot / assistant / "an AI" theme and looks at LLMs as function approximators -- where, weirdly, the function needs to be "found" first. (Yes, DSPy will feature heavily.)

I agree. Our analysis (arxiv.org/abs/2310.00535) on training dynamics of Transformer shows that self-attention really plays an important role in learning the right representation. More specifically, self-attention dynamics encourages tokens with high co-occurrence to learn first,…
not true, especially for language. if you trained a large & deep MLP language model with no self-attention, no matter how much data you'll feed it you'll still be lacking behind a transformer (with much less data). will it get to the same point? i don't think so. your tokens…

@adad8m Regarding whether the student had the idea, the way to tell is to look at their advisor's papers, and see if the paper is in the same subarea the advisor has been publishing in for a while. If the paper's some distance away from the advisor's other papers, it's the student's.

@ProfLaurenRoss @WiringTheBrain @raj_raizada @NicoleCRust @YouTube Exactly. This is a standard view in control systems theory: feedback interconnections can implement exchange of matter, energy, and information, in various combinations.
Kids, be careful! If you first multiply the two matrices this will transform your O(N²) code into 0(N³)... It may actually make it at lot slower than your for loop. You're better off not using a diagonal matrix at all and doing a vector elementwise multiplication instead.
After advising many people from the Python generation (I am a retired Matlab/Perl programmer), I’ve come to realize that many of these kids don’t know that to avoid using a for loop you need to learn how to multiple by a diagonal matrix. 😅
