Finally, we need to carefully address potentially complex interaction effects between species traits & species exposure to climate change when analysing species range shifts as this can greatly improve the explanatory power of the model

Among documented range shifts, there is LOTS of variation. Of over 26,000 range shifts in the #BioShifts database, the majority are in the directions expected based on temperature change (59%), but many species are not shifting (6%), or are shifting opposite to temperature (35%).

And icing on the cake 🧁we linked this new velocity metric with empirical values of mountain species range shifts from the #BioShifts database ⬇️ And guess what? The probability that a species tracks isotherm shifts in elevation decreases with the velocity of isotherm shifts
It actually depends on vapour pressure 💧 For dry air, in theory, it is 10°C per km vertically ➡️ This is the dry adiabatic lapse rate but when the air is moist, then the rate is less steep & this changes how fast isotherms may shift upward as the climate warms

Happy to see this exciting paper out, and grateful a was involved in it! We show that climatic stability is a predictor of the correlation between species abundance and genetic diversity! So, in continental communities, "community age" can be approximated by climatic stability

Finally, we need to carefully address potentially complex interaction effects between species traits & species exposure to climate change when analysing species range shifts as this can greatly improve the explanatory power of the model

Among documented range shifts, there is LOTS of variation. Of over 26,000 range shifts in the #BioShifts database, the majority are in the directions expected based on temperature change (59%), but many species are not shifting (6%), or are shifting opposite to temperature (35%).

These researchers trapped small mammals living at nearly 22,000 ft elevation in the Andes. By comparison, the summit of Mt. Everest is at about 29,000 ft. Incredible!!
