It’s kinda crazy to me that we melt sand down, clean it to 99.99999% purity, literal wizards have to draw it slowly into an ingot, we cut it, inscribe a hundred billion little on/off switches on it, and when you run electric current through it you can do basic arithmetic, which when you do enough of it can do any math on the planet, and which describes reality well enough that we can teach it the ontological meaning of words and their distance from each other on a high-dimensional space, and if you ask, it can tell you what word comes next and that apparently is powerful enough that if you do it a hundred billion times it’s the smartest thing to ever exist oh yeah and we use this primarily for email

A few warm fatherly tears shed today by an empty fort in the woods, so lovingly built, and so lately left, by a growing child with (quite rightly) more grown up things to do. I wish I could find her in there peeking out again, just a little smaller. Too fast; it is all too fast.

The Economist put the chart on a log scale. I wonder why they did that? Here it is on a normal one.

The biggest culture shock I've experienced so far is that the Apple store in Japan doesn't lock any devices to the table

one thing i've recently learned is that women don't stop competing with other women once they get married and have children, they just start competing for something else intrasexual competition never ends and instead of trying to secure the best man for themselves, they're now trying to secure the best possible future for their children, which means competing with other mothers for resources, attention, opportunities, etc. and i wonder how much of the constant complaining about marriage and motherhood is actually part of this even when happily married, loving their children and with a good life, every time they talk to other women they make sure to tell them how exhausting motherhood is, how useless their husband is, how much they miss their freedom or how having kids ruined their body the reason is that they are competing for attention for themselves and that the fewer women who decide to have children, the fewer children theirs will have to compete with they don't even consciously realize what they're doing we've spent hundreds of thousands of years competing for resources to keep our offspring alive and all those instincts didn't magically disappear the moment a woman becomes a mother obviously some women are genuinely miserable. but MANY of them are making their lives sound worse than they actually are (especially on social media) to make other women more miserable and what's fucking terrifying is that until very recently this sort of behaviour could only influence the handful of women around them. now a single mother complaining about how much she regrets having children can reach millions of young women who haven't even started their families yet i wonder how much this has contributed to making an entire generation terrified of marriage and motherhood and how much damage it's doing

FT comments never miss. I don’t think I’ve read such a rational analysis of the situation we’re in for a long time.

I've been in France since 2002 and have never seen the streets so violent nor the politics so extreme. From the sacking of the supermarket on my street to the prospect of Présidente Le Pen, here's me @FT including thoughts from 2 French Nobel laureates as.ft.com/r/addcad57-0f9…

Milwaukee Brewers fans showed up to tailgate World Series Game 1 at nine in the morning. The parking lot gates were still locked. First pitch was ten hours away. In old Japan, when ten thousand people camp outside a fortress at dawn with iron cauldrons, smoke, and provisions, it is called a siege. Milwaukee laid siege to its own castle. Out of pure love. With bratwurst and folding chairs. When reporters told Christian Yelich that fans had been lined up since nine, he said he was surprised it took them that long. In my land, a general knows the battle is already half won when his people light the morning fires before the gates even open. Nobody guards a castle like the Midwest in October.

This is what happens when a nation does not bring down standards to appease the low IQ civilians and does not tolerate rioting / looting / open-season migration from individuals who refuse to assimilate

It is a rare miracle in human history that Tokyo, a massive metropolis with a population of 30 million, is clean and safe throughout, with virtually no slums or dangerous districts.

@Rothmus Those who are opposed to corporations and favor government do not realize that government is simply the largest, most monopolistic corporation of all and it has a monopoly on violence.

Most impressive thing I’ve ever seen. I would like to invest my entire net worth in Cognition now

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman: "I don't even know a dramatic enough word to use… models can find bugs that are outside of the normal threat model of what we think a hacker can do… hardware-level, insane stuff… I no longer think we're gonna be able to just patch all the bugs." It's over.

The infamous banned Halloween cold open from The Office that you won’t find on @peacock or @netflix. Michael Scott really had no boundaries.

A Europa será destruída por mulheres que projetam naqueles animais a maternidade que cabia aos filhos que elas abortaram.
