Remembering the great Dizzy Gillespie who was born on this day in 1917. One of the seminal figures of the bebop movement, Gillespie possessed tremendous technique and played with abandon, reaching the highest notes in the trumpet’s range. Gillespie, with saxophonist Charlie Parker and pianist Thelonious Monk, spearheaded the revolutionary jazz style “Bebop”, a reaction to swing, distinct for dissonant harmonies and polyrhythms. It laid the foundation for modern jazz and the musical language that is now common place in the jazz community. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up being similar to those of Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis’s emergence in the 1970s that Gillespie’s style was successfully recreated. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality have made him an enduring icon. His compositions “Salt Peanuts,” “Woody ’n’ You,” “Con Alma,” “Groovin’ High,” “Blue ’n’ Boogie,” and “A Night in Tunisia” all became jazz standards. Here, he is performing live in France, 1960.
