They are not paid via levy, but thru court fees paid by defendants. They also have powers bestowed to traditional Law Enforcement Officers, as per their county. If there are any Alabama folks who wish to correct, clarify, or add detail please do! Now back to Constable Nicholson.

There primary function is to serve as Officers of the Court, performing duties such as serving summons, warrants & carrying out other orders from the Court & Sheriff. They work with legislators as representatives of their voting precinct, & direct traffic for schools & churches.

In the US, the role varies by, to include even having the position at all. It varies further in Alabama depending on the county you serve. In counties with Constables they are fully fledged LEOs who serve following their election to the position as a “conservator of peace”.

Constable Nicholson then took up service in his current role of constable. Now, I had to dig a little to find out what that meant. I know foreign police services have actual constable positions that are standardized across the force on a national scale. Not the case in the US.

Constable Nicholson was 78 years old and had been in Law Enforcement for the last 40+ years, starting his career as Deputy Sheriff for the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Officer. He was known for his dedication to his community, returning to unpaid service as a reserve deputy.

I want to do an impromptu in memoriam for a LEO who was shot & killed in Alabama at the start of the month. Constable Madison "Skip" Nicholson was shot and killed December 1st responding to a Domestic Violence call where a woman reported her ex told her he was coming to kill her.
