A sea pen on #PihaBeach for #WorldFisheriesDay highlights the threat to #deepsealife fm #bottomtrawling. Last year our trawlers landed 6 tonnes of corals in nets. NZ's the only country still bottom trawling in the Sth Pacific #defendthedeep Time for a ban chng.it/fHcyQngKYZ
And that's just New Zealand 😱🪸 The fishing industry claims it trawls on soft sediment, yet opposes efforts to get trawling off seamounts (which are solid structures, that's why corals and other seabed life can attach there). Time to ban trawling on all seamounts and features.
New report by the NZ Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment #DisturbingTheDeep reveals bottom trawling as one of the greatest threats to stored carbon in our seabed. Let's stop the damage to climate and deep sea life, and #DefendTheDeep instead! storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0399e1…

We agree! Deep-see #VME’s should be protected. Great talk from @SandraRMaier on the ‘coolest’ cold-water corals in Greenland in the #Management & #Conservation session
Orange roughy can live to 250 years old. Fish from near Tasmania aged to 250 years and on the Louisville seamount chain over 230 years. Some start breeding a lot older than 20 years.

@PCE_NZ new report is another reason to end bottom trawling of our oceans. Our deepwater areas (200-1500m) contain a substantial portion of our seabed carbon, but these areas are also being heavily fished by bottom trawlers and there lies the harm. #defendthedeep
A new report commissioned by PCE and researched by @niwa was launched today at the @GeoscienceNZ annual conference. It reveals that up to 2240 million tonnes of organic carbon are stored in marine sediments in NZ’s EEZ. Learn more: arcg.is/01OaG8
