Throwback to the day Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was returning to Kaduna from Abuja and encountered kidnappers who had blocked the road and were carrying out their operations. Despite the obvious danger, his security details reportedly advised him to turn back because the situation was unsafe. But that is Mallam for you, he refused to abandon innocent Nigerians to their fate. He insisted that the kidnappers be confronted. That decision reportedly disrupted the attack and saved hundreds of travellers from a potential kidnapping. Whatever anyone thinks about Mallam Nasir El-Rufai politically, one thing has always stood out, his courage is exceptional. He is not the kind of leader who sits comfortably behind a desk and gives instructions from a safe distance. When duty calls, Mallam is willing to confront danger head on. Mallam embodies a rare combination of intelligence, courage and decisiveness. That is Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

Abiyos Anya kuwa? In the same sentence, you said Mallam insults Islamic and Christian clerics, yet in that same sentence, you also claimed he divided Kaduna along religious lines. From what I heard in your statement, Mallam clearly called out religious clerics without discrimination, Islamic clerics and Christian clerics alike, contrary to the agenda most of you have been pushing for years, that he only did it to Christians or deliberately targeted Christian clerics. As far as I am concerned, that is exactly what made him different. He did not kiss the ass of any side or treat anyone as being above the law. Whether you were Muslim or Christian, a cleric or a political figure, everyone was expected to obey the law or face the full consequences of disobeying it. That was what defined the El-Rufai administration.

EL-RUFAI: JUSTICE SHOULD BE SEEN DONE The NSCIA has persistently refrained from commenting on the controversy surrounding the prosecutions of @elrufai or any political figure. However, recent developments in the public domain have raised serious concerns about religious bias.

I have just come across this old interview of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. In the video, El-Rufai said that the problem with some Southern Kaduna elites is that they have their own established narrative, and whether it is true or false, they stick to it. and, anyone who says something contrary to that narrative is immediately seen as having taken sides. He went further to say that even amongst them, anyone who is moderate or genuinely promotes peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic and religious groups can easily be considered a sellout. Interestingly, he mentioned that this was one of the issues that allegedly frustrated his former Deputy Governor to the point where he decided he no longer wanted to remain Deputy Governor and instead chose to pursue the Senate. El-Rufai also said something about how previous governments handled crises and influential actors in Southern Kaduna, and how the fact that he couldn’t continue is why they won’t like him. He said there was a culture of appeasement that had existed for years, that whenever there was trouble, violence or killings, some of the same people would eventually be invited by the government to whine and dine, and be given brown envelopes. In his words, this had allegedly been the pattern for about 20 years before his administration came into office, which the video I quoted confirmed. He said when his government came in, they decided that the era of appeasing people simply because they could cause trouble was over. He said nobody who did not encourage peaceful coexistence would have access to him as Governor simply because they represented a particular ethnic or religious interest. He also said his administration was using security agencies to carefully monitor and map those it believed were involved in organising violence, with the intention of gathering enough evidence to eventually prosecute them. He said he would not appease criminals or people who had nothing to offer society except raising the spectre of genocide and crisis in order to attract international attention and donations. Perhaps the most striking part of the interview was his claim that previous governments were allegedly paying some of these individuals what he described as “Peace Money” every month. According to El-Rufai, his administration stopped it, and that was one of the major reasons he was constantly accused of taking sides. Now, you may disagree with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai politically. You may disagree with some of his decisions as Governor. You may even disagree completely with the allegations he made in this video. But this is where the quoted video becomes important. This was not a narrative he suddenly invented today because of his current political battles, the issue of Southern Kaduna leaders organizing killings in Southern Kaduna has been proven in court, and a ruling was gotten from it. And when you put this interview alongside the historical records we have been discussing, including the events surrounding the 1992 crisis, the subsequent prosecution of prominent figures and the decades of ethnic and religious tension that existed before El-Rufai ever became Governor, it reinforces everything he alleged. Kaduna’s religious and ethnic crisis did not start with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. The divisions were already there. The competing narratives were already there. The influential actors were already there. The politics surrounding ethnic and religious violence were already deeply established. El-Rufai simply entered a Kaduna that had already experienced decades of complicated ethnic and religious tensions. So when people today attempt to reduce the entire history of Kaduna’s crises to El-Rufai and his administration, they are either ignoring history or deliberately refusing to acknowledge it. This old video does not mean that El-Rufai was perfect, neither does it mean that his administration should not be criticised where criticism is necessary.
