Abiy is not defending Ethiopia. He is not pursuing Ethiopia's national interests in the Red Sea. His actions raise a far more serious question: whose interests is he serving? He is undertaking a dangerous gamble that could threaten Ethiopia's very survival. The contradictions are glaring. Ethiopia is consumed by internal conflicts, with its military dispersed across Tigray—Mekelle, Shire, Adigrat and all over Ethiopia. Yet Abiy makes the Red Sea his central ambition. How does a government struggling to secure stability at home contemplate confrontation beyond its borders? An agenda-driven press reinforces the danger, portraying Eritrea as the aggressor while disregarding Eritrea's sovereignty and its right to defend itself. Eritrea's letter to the UN Security Council is therefore both a legal and moral necessity. Ethiopia's invocation of self-defense must be examined against Abiy's repeated declarations on Red Sea access. The Security Council must confront the danger of aggression rather than allow competing narratives to manufacture another war. The larger regional picture cannot be ignored. Is the objective to counter Yemen, undermine the emerging Alamein alignment, or pursue destabilization and regime change? The earlier Eritrea–Ethiopia–Somalia rapprochement was undermined. Now cooperation among Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan is reshaping the region. The timing and motives behind renewed confrontation demand scrutiny. Abiy's ambitions also collide with China's diplomatic engagement with Egypt and Eritrea and the changing balance of regional relationships. His attempt to position himself as the region's central power looks increasingly disconnected from political and military realities. There is a historical warning. The TPLF's military calculations during the 1998–2000 war, including the costly fighting around Bure, demonstrated the devastating price of strategic overreach. That history should not be forgotten. Ethiopia faces vulnerabilities on multiple fronts: internal conflict, regional tensions, and dependence on the Djibouti corridor. A disruption of that lifeline would have enormous consequences. Opposition coalitions reflect the depth of Ethiopia's internal political crisis. The fundamental question remains: How does another confrontation with Eritrea serve Ethiopia's people? If Abiy's Red Sea ambitions produce another war, the consequences could extend far beyond his government. Ethiopia itself would bear the cost. This is not strategy. Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is these days accusing Eritrea for acts of "unprovoked aggression that may jeopardize regional peace and security". Audacity and duplicity in their most extreme forms! The indelible facts: 1. Ethiopia has in essence declared a war of aggression against Eritrea when its Prime Minister announced to his Parliament on 13 October 2023 that his regime will acquire "sovereign access to the sea, through negotiations if possible and by force if necessary". 2. As illustrated in the Press Release issued at the time (link below), Eritrea responded with exemplary restraint and equanimity to underline that it will not be provoked by these perplexing pronouncements and events. 3. In subsequent and repetitive campaigns to agitate and solicit support from his domestic constituencies to his war agenda, the PP's leader invoked "Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights" as a useful precedent for what he had in mind for Assab. 4. He went further to denigrate and deny Eritrea's independence by stating that "he could not find any legal documents in all Ethiopian Government archives - the Cabinet, Parliament etc. - in relation to Eritrea's independence". 5. His periodic and strident agitations included urging and reminding the Ethiopian Army that its core mission centered on "ensuring and maintaining the security of the Red Sea from the edge of Somalia to the Port of Massawa". 4. Taking their cue from the Potemkin Party's Chief, senior political and military officials dwelt on provocative statements on several public events; essentially to declare that they will correct the "historical mistake" and forcefully occupy the Eritrean port of Assab as well as its entire southern coastline to secure "strategic depth" to their phantom naval force. 5. And, on 27 September last month, the Ethiopian Army's Deputy Chief of Staff openly declared that "the offensive launched in Tigray will not stop there". He went on to state: "Mekelle is a mere stop-over, our ultimate destination is Assab; our main objective is to install our flag in the Red Sea". 6. The hysterical infatuation with the Red Sea must also be seen with previous intentions to wage a war of invasion against Eritrea but that were not publicly divulged at the time. Indeed, the PP regime did not only try to entice the TPLF to join forces for an invasion against Eritrea in confidential meetings in Djibouti and Seychelles during the Tigray War in early/mid 2022, but a confidential report issued by the EU Envoy after her visit to Ethiopia in September 2022 - a couple of months prior to the Pretoria Agreement - bluntly announced that the 2018 Peace Agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia had become "null and void". These were apparently sinister machinations to which Eritrea had no inkling at the time. In its communications to the UN Security Council yesterday, Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry has formally informed the UN Security Council that it is “taking measures” to implement the war of aggression that it has declared against Eritrea for three-years now. 2. Ethiopia’s deceitful attempts to rationalize its brazen acts of war against a sovereign UN member State in “self-defense” terms is hollow in substance and constitutes an insult to the intelligence of the international community. 3. #Eritrea's delegation, led by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, is participating in the 81st UN General Assembly Debate. The delegation will conduct, throughout the Session, a series of crucial bilateral and high-level meetings reflecting Eritrea's steadfast commitment to the principles of the UN Charter & international law, inclusive and equitable multilateralism, and a just world order. In this vein, FM Osman Saleh met yesterday UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for extensive discussions on vital regional and global matters. The Foreign Minister conveyed Eritrea's appreciation for the SG's services to the Organization and for his constructive engagement with Eritrea. FM Osman further underlined the enduring importance of the UN Charter and the foundational pillars that it espouses - i.e. sovereign equality, territorial integrity, political independence, non-interference and the peaceful settlement of disputes. FM Osman elucidated Eritrea's position on the Sudan that is anchored on support to a united, sovereign and stable Sudan; and a Sudanese-owned, inclusive political process supported by regional and international mechanisms. On the wider region and especially in regard to the security of the Red Sea and Bab-al Mandab, FM Osman stressed Eritrea's support for safe maritime navigation and international cooperation, while respecting the sovereignty and legitimate interests of the littoral States. FM Osman also dwelt on provocative acts of Ethiopia's Prosperity Party towards its neighbours in flagrant breach of the foundational principles of the UN Charter and international law. As it will be recalled, Eritrea was elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. In this respect, Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam presided over the evening plenary debate, during the opening day of UNGA81, on behalf of Eritrea and in her capacity as VPGA.

On the margins of #UNGA81, Eritrea's delegation led by FM Osman Saleh has held a series of meetings with his counterparts from Algeria, Burkina Faso and Egypt respectively in the past two days. In this respect, the meeting with Mr. Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of #Algeria, focused on peace and security in Africa, including security in the #RedSea and the Gulf of Aden. The two Ministers reaffirmed their commitment for the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African States and rejected foreign interventions that have contributed to conflicts across #Africa. They also agreed to strengthen Algeria-Eritrea bilateral relations. In the meeting with Mr. Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of #BurkinaFaso, the two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and toenhance cooperation on issues of common interest at the regional and international levels. FM Osman Saleh further held cordial talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Badr Abdelatty. Building on their previous engagements, the two Ministers discussed concrete measures of further strengthening the warm ties of cooperation that exist between the two countries, and exchanged views on addressing regional issues of mutual interest.
