This is the tombstone of Nectovelius, son of Vindex, a British-born Roman soldier who was recruited into the 2nd Cohort of Thracians. He served on the Antonine Wall in what is now Scotland and was buried near the frontier fort of Mumrills #EpigraphyTuesday

966 years ago today. Malcolm Canmore was crowned King Malcolm III of Scotland at Scone - on the Stone of Scone - on 25 April 1058. He was the first king of the House of Dunkeld that would go on to rule Scotland for the next 232 years. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usbiography/mo…
The Cramond Lioness - This #Roman sculpture was found in the mouth of the River Almond at Cramond, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1997. It shows a bound male prisoner being eaten by the Lioness & is thought to come from Cramond Roman Fort. It dates to the Mid 2nd - early 3rd century AD.

In the 19th century, 1,400-year-old bull carvings were found at Burghead in Moray, once the home of a huge Pictish fortress 🐂 According to @NtlMuseumsScot, theories to explain their significance include "religious, territorial emblems or clan totems": digitscotland.com/scottish-artef…

Indeed, St Mark's Day, 1058, & likely to be accurate. Enjoyed 35 years in power, feat. at least 5 invasions of England. Grandson of an abbot from Tayside, he secured his new dynasty & is the first king known for certain to have controlled significant territory south of the Forth

Spotted in Melrose last week, a plaque to the Curle brothers and George Macdonald, the 'Big Three' of Roman archaeology in Scotland in the early 20th century. If you ask me, we need to nominate a new 'Big Three' for the 21st century - but who to include...? @TrimontiumTrust
Roman fortifications built on the Gask Ridge in Perthshire and Angus, Scotland - it’s a series of forts and fortlets connected by a road. Probably dates to the 1st century/earliest invasion of Scotland with some evidence of later Roman activity@

The fantastic Ardoch Roman fort near Perth is considered one of the best preserved series of military earthworks in the Roman empire. For us it’s particularly interesting as a possible, Agricolan military annexe has been identified north of the fort #Castleshaw #Romans
And a few more training highlights. But today we start the #HadriansWall challenge. Seven days heading west from @SegedunumFort for @firefighters999 with @thomasewarner and good friends. Its going to be one helluva journey! There may even be some #Roman tweets along the way! 🧱👍
The @GovanStones Sarcophagus is a triumph of Viking-Age art from the lost early-medieval kingdom of the Strathclyde Britons. We think it dates from the late C9th, and may have held the relics of the Pictish saint-king, Constantine. My video, with help from the great Frazer Capie

As the king who attached 'Lothian' to Scotland, there is a good case for naming one of the Forth road bridges after him. Indeed, if I'm ever FM I will rename each of them the 'Malcolm Canmore Bridge' & the 'Queen Margaret Bridge', sadly don't think either prospect is very likely.
Máel Coluim mac Donnchada was inaugurated king of Alba #OTD in 1058, according to the 14thC historian John of Fordun.
Very pleased to announce that I have been promoted to Professor of Frontier Archaeology @ArchaeologyNCL!

Very much enjoying this from @thetrivent and @BibbyMiriam , telling the story of the rise and fall of one of the most influential.equines, the Galloway pony, now extinct. It gallops through the centuries at quite a pace. Recommended

There’s something about a stone circle in a lonely country churchyard … especially one with an altar-like recumbent slab flanked by megalithic incisors. Quite spooky really. Midmar Kirk would make a good setting for a folk horror movie. #StandingStoneSunday

If @GovanStones is your thing and you ever find yourself in Saltcoats, visit @NACHeritage where the Kilwinning Cross resides. Found in the gable of a house on Main Street, Kilwinning, 1940, & including biblical scenes of King David, seen playing his harp.
Hopefully someone @ScotWaterWest can help locate where the Stanely Cross has been stored? It was apparently taken somewhere for its protection. Would be quite something if we could work together to rediscover it as it's a monument of national importance.
