The exchange of prisoners of war is always a complex process that requires enormous effort, lengthy negotiations, and extensive diplomatic work. The russian side consistently acts unpredictably and conducting a large-scale exchange is particularly difficult amid the current instability in international politics. I thank the President of Ukraine, @ZelenskyyUa, and the entire team who worked on this exchange and achieved such an important result. The return of the servicemen of the Mariupol garrison is particularly important to me. These are warriors who held their positions under extremely difficult conditions and ended their defense only after receiving the appropriate order. They did not flee, abandon their comrades, or betray their military oath. They remained at their positions until the very end, unlike those who fled and left their fellow soldiers behind to fend for themselves. It is extremely important to see Azov fighters among those released from captivity. They demonstrated exceptional resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to their military duty. They followed orders, defended Mariupol, and remained loyal to their comrades and their country. I firmly believe that bringing Azov fighters and other defenders of Mariupol home must remain one of the highest priorities in prisoner exchanges. Those who did not betray their homeland, did not abandon their comrades, and stood their ground until the very end deserve special attention from the state. I also want to thank all the units and fighters who capture russian servicemen on the battlefield and help replenish the pool of prisoners available for exchange. Your combat efforts make it possible to bring our defenders home. Every successful exchange is also the result of your hard work, the risks you take, and your professionalism. Without you, these returns would not have been possible. We must bring all of our people home.
⚡️⚡️2250. Highest daily losses of the russian army since the start of the full-scale invasion Over the past day, 21 October 2026, the Defence Forces of Ukraine neutralised 2250 russian occupiers. This is the highest daily figure for enemy personnel losses since the start of russia's full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine. Ukrainians are doing everything possible to preserve the life of every service member and civilian. In russia, however, a soldier is merely a resource – one that is not spared and is simply sent to be destroyed. 📊 Top five daily enemy personnel losses: 21.10.2026 — 2250 personnel; 19.12.2024 — 2200 personnel; 18.10.2026 — 2100 personnel; 27.09.2026 — 2090 personnel; 28.11.2024 — 2030 personnel. Three of the five highest figures were recorded in September and October 2026. The previous record had stood for almost two years. Since the beginning of 2026, the russian aggressor's total personnel losses have amounted to approximately 363 820. Since 24 February 2022, the russian army has lost 1 572 790 personnel. 📈 Enemy losses are rising month on month. In February 2026 they stood at 26 090 personnel, while in September they reached 46 230 — the highest monthly figure since the start of the year. In less than three weeks of October, the occupiers' losses have already reached almost 37 000 personnel. The Defence Forces of Ukraine are systematically depleting the offensive potential of the russian army in order to bring russia's armed aggression against our country to a complete end. Glory to Ukraine! 🇺🇦
Trump: "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine." Russia: being "fine on Ukraine".
Starlink has absolutely no role in the one military campaign Trump claims he wants Ukraine to end: hitting Russian oil refineries. It only works in Ukraine and it helps with air defense — homegrown air defense, to be specific, which was born of necessity because we aren’t providing enough missile interceptors. A Russian Shahed today killed a one-year baby in a park. The U.S. is actively making it easier for Russia to commit these atrocities by throttling satellite internet. All while Trump makes excuses for Putin.
🇺🇦 Zelenskyy delivers a blunt message to the United States: “Just give us Starlink back. If you refuse, Ukraine will survive. We will continue defending ourselves with or without it. But why would you restrict a country fighting for its survival? Why make it harder for us to
Russian military bloggers now claim Starlink restrictions have disrupted Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistics, easing pressure on occupied Crimea and the southern land corridor. Putin’s only tangible victory since 2022 These routes sustain Russia’s occupation, moving troops, ammunition and fuel to the front. Restricting Ukraine’s ability to hit them gives Moscow breathing space. A policy that could have been written in the Kremlin, delivered by Washington.
Durante las ‘protestas’ en Lille🇫🇷 hubo saqueos en la tienda del equipo y horas después las prendas ya están a la venta en Vinted. No le han quitado ni la alarma anti robos🤦🏻♂️.
An editorial entitled ‘Zelensky Is Open to a Starlink Deal’ has been published in WSJ Opinion. And I completely disagree with the main message of this piece. The WSJ is proposing a deal to Ukraine: we would halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure for 100 days, and in return the US would extend Starlink coverage approximately 300 kilometres into Russia, so that the Ukrainian army could strike missile launchers and drones. According to the WSJ, this proposal was conveyed to Zelenskyy by Republican Senators Roger Wicker and Kevin Cramer. The editorial states: “Ukraine would take a breather from striking Russian energy assets. In exchange the U.S. would expand Ukraine’s Starlink satellite coverage up to roughly 300 kilometers into Russia.” And further: “The trade by our lights is worth it.” In my opinion, no. This is not how relations between allies should look. Such a deal might at least resemble a fair one if Ukraine were given the full capacity to operate up to 470 kilometres deep into Russia, rather than just 300. Kharkiv is situated approximately 30 kilometres from the Russian border, Sumy approximately 25–30 kilometres, and Kyiv just over 200 kilometres. Meanwhile, Russia can launch missiles from territory situated considerably further than the proposed 300-kilometre zone. Therefore, 300 kilometres does not represent parity. It is yet another artificial restriction on Ukraine’s capabilities. A range of up to 470 kilometres would at least have allowed for a significant expansion of the zone within which Russian launchers could not operate with impunity. First, Starlink and Starshield – which are critically important to the Ukrainian army – are restricted without warning. Such decisions cost Ukrainian lives. Then Ukraine is offered the chance to restore or expand these capabilities in exchange for refraining from strikes on one of the most vulnerable points of the Russian military economy. This is not a deal. It is blackmail. At the same time, the WSJ itself acknowledges the obvious: “Ukraine has every right to raise the pressure on Mr. Putin to stop his conquest.” This raises a simple question: if Ukraine has this right, why should it have to pay the price of refraining from effective strikes in exchange for the ability to defend itself against Russian missiles? “But the ability to hit the Russian archer instead of letting the arrows fall is even better.” But the mere ability to strike at the “archer” must not come at the cost of security guarantees for Russian oil refineries. Ukraine needs both the ability to destroy Russian launchers and the ability to strike at the infrastructure that sustains the Russian war machine. For some reason, Russia isn’t making a choice. Why should Ukraine have to choose? Especially after Trump had already announced some sort of ‘energy truce’ – one that Ukraine and Russia had not, in fact, agreed upon between themselves – whilst Russia continued its strikes. “A frustrated Mr. Zelensky now says Ukraine will resume targeting Russian energy sites after Mr. Putin ignored Mr. Trump’s announcement last weekend of a “cease-fire” and continued to bomb Ukraine’s energy sites.” Russia is violating the ‘ceasefire’. Russia continues to strike. Yet once again, Ukraine is being asked to make concessions. No. America has been and remains our ally. The American people, Congress, the military and millions of Americans have helped Ukraine throughout the war. That is precisely why, as a matter of principle, I do not wish to equate the United States with the current administration. Through its recent actions, the current US administration is behaving not as an ally of Ukraine, but as an ally of Russia. We hope that the American political system will be able to restore relations between the US and Ukraine to a normal alliance model. Because the normal model is very simple. Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine is defending itself. An ally helps Ukraine defeat the aggressor, rather than haggling with it over the right to defend itself.
You've probably seen the video. A young Frenchwoman in Paris, in tears, begging looters to stop. "Why are you doing this? That's not what we stand for." Some accounts are mocking her. "She voted for it." I won't. Because what you see on her face is not stupidity. It's a disease that has infected the entire West, and it has a name: suicidal empathy. The term comes from Gad Saad, an evolutionary behavioral scientist at Concordia University in Montreal. A man who fled the Lebanese civil war as a child, and who knows what it looks like when a society falls apart. His new book, Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind, is the follow-up to The Parasitic Mind. Here is the thesis, and why it concerns every one of us. Empathy is one of the best things about us. It evolved for a reason: to care for our children, our kin, our tribe. It was calibrated for a world where the people you felt for were the people around you, and where empathy always came paired with its counterweight: the instinct to protect your own and to recognize a threat. Suicidal empathy is what happens when that mechanism misfires. When it fires at the wrong targets, in the wrong amounts, with no brake. When we feel more for the criminal than for his victim. More for the stranger who breaks the rules than for the citizen who follows them. More for how compassionate we look than for what our compassion actually produces. Where does it come from? Four layers. First, biology. Empathy is a spotlight, as the psychologist Paul Bloom put it. It lights up the one face in front of you and leaves everything else in the dark. The crying migrant on the boat is visible. The thousands of future victims of a broken system are statistics. A spotlight is a terrible tool for running a country. Second, our own civilization. The West is the civilization that put the victim at the center of its morality. Christianity taught us to care for the stranger, the poor, the weak. It was one of the greatest moral revolutions in history. But cut off from its other half, justice, responsibility, the duty to protect your own, it turns into something else. Third, ideology. In The Parasitic Mind, Saad described idea pathogens, ideas that hijack our reasoning. Suicidal empathy is the emotional counterpart: an ideology that hijacks our compassion. It sorts the world into oppressors and victims, then demands unlimited empathy for whoever ranks as the victim, whatever they do. Fourth, status. In the age of social media, empathy has become a display. Posting "refugees welcome" costs nothing and earns applause. The bill goes to someone else: the working class, the suburbs, the women walking home at night. The results are everywhere. Criminals treated as victims of society. Sexual assaults by migrants met with lenient sentences. Self-defense branded as aggression. Borders treated as cruelty. Saad's conclusion is simple: a society dies when it would rather display infinite tolerance than use its survival instinct. Now the part I'll add myself, and that few people dare to say. On average, women score higher than men on measures of empathy. It's one of the most consistent findings in psychology, across cultures, and it makes perfect evolutionary sense: for most of human history, the survival of children depended on it. It's a strength. But it means an ideology that weaponizes empathy will hit women harder. And the data shows it: in country after country, young women have moved sharply to the left of young men, especially on immigration. This is where men have a responsibility. Not to mock. Not to lecture. Not to say "she deserved it." Empathy has always needed a counterweight, and that counterweight was the protective instinct: the one that draws lines, says no, and stands between the threat and the people it loves. Men abandoned that role. They were told it was toxic, and many believed it. So they stayed silent at the dinner table, at work, with their partners, sisters, daughters and friends. That has to end. Men have to have this conversation, honestly and with respect: compassion that cannot say no is not compassion. It's surrender. And the first to pay for it are women. Many women already understand this better than anyone. Some of the bravest voices in this fight are women, precisely because they are the first to feel the danger in the street. A civilization rests on a balance: compassion and strength, openness and borders, mercy and justice. When one side swallows the other, the foundations crack. What we are watching in Europe is what happens when empathy has no counterweight left. Look at that young woman again. She isn't the enemy. She's what this ideology made of a generation that was told kindness would be enough. Our job is to make sure she's the last generation that has to learn it this way.
She voted for it. She welcomed them. Faced with the encore, she begs them to stop. In her heart she knows they will not. Everything she believed. That they were French like her, fighting for the same cause. That the ones who warned her were full of hate. That she would be safe.

It’s astonishing that even nearly 13 years later, this unremarkable exchange continues to be the foundational myth of a US-sponsored coup in Ukraine. This has to have been one of the most successful operations by the FSB, ever. Incidentally, the “fuck the EU” part was also well-deserved, as the Europeans were slow-walking everything while also having a Russian informant as part of their delegation: the Latvian MEP Tatjana Ždanoka, who was reporting to her FSB handler Beltyukov. She later served as an “international observer” in the fake Crimea referendum, and is still co-chair of the Latvian Russian Union.
04.02.2014: Nuland–Pyatt call is leaked. On 25.01, Yanukovych offered Yatsenyuk PM and Klitschko deputy PM. The US diplomats discuss a deal and UN mediation. Frustrated by EU delays, Nuland says “Fuck the EU.” Meanwhile, Igor Girkin had visited Crimea to prepare its annexation.
Ukraine can't destroy Gazprom's pipelines because doing so inconveniences German consumers. Ukraine can't hit Russian refineries because that inconveniencs US consumer. Russia, on the other hand, can destroy Ukraine's energy grid because it inconveniences no one. Shameful.
I just don't get why US conservatives see Russia as a defender of Christian values while its forces kill Ukrainian Christians, shut churches and torture pastors. My new documentary, See You in Heaven, tells this story. Thanks @professorgerdes for having me on to discuss it.
