On October 22, North Korean television released a video claiming that Kim Jong-un, after receiving medical treatment and recovering well, met with all members of his medical team. Recently, the North Korean authorities have repeatedly used Kim Jong-un's body double in public appearances to counter rumors that he is undergoing emergency treatment at Peking Union Medical College Hospital or has even died, and to demonstrate to the world that Kim Jong-un is in excellent health. Currently, it cannot be confirmed whether this is indeed Kim Jong-un's body double. x.com/nanaaji4440444…

In 2003, the Green River Killer sat stone-faced while family after family told him they hoped he would suffer and burn in hell. Then one father stood up, and the killer finally broke. Gary Ridgway killed at least 49 women and girls around Seattle between 1982 and 1998. He spray-painted trucks at the Kenworth factory, went home to his wife, and passed a police polygraph in 1984. DNA finally caught him in 2001, as he walked out of work. To avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty to 48 murders and agreed to lead detectives to the bodies. He told them he had killed so many women that he lost count. The video below is from his sentencing on December 18, 2003. “She was a mother, she was a wife, she was a sister, and we miss her.” “He’s an animal.” “I wish for him to have a long, suffering, cruel death.” He doesn’t move. Then Robert Rule walks up. His daughter Linda was 16. “Mr. Ridgway, there are people here that hate you. I’m not one of them. You’ve made it difficult to live up to what I believe, and that is what God says to do, and that’s to forgive. You are forgiven, sir.” Ridgway’s face breaks, and he cries. He got 48 life sentences without parole. A 49th was added in 2011. Could you have said what Robert Rule said?
In 1993, Jeffrey Dahmer was 33 years old, serving 999 years inside a maximum security prison in Wisconsin. Three guards escorted him everywhere. One on each arm. Handcuffs on at all times. The most dangerous human being in America - kept alive only so he could rot in a cell. This interview was never meant to be seen. It sat in the Inside Edition archives for 30 years. In the video below, a monster wearing a human face sits across from journalist Nancy Glass and answers the one question nobody expected him to answer honestly. Are the urges still there? He paused. Then said he wished he could tell her they were gone. But no. Even locked inside concrete and steel, serving nearly a thousand years - the compulsions that turned him into a predator were still hunting inside his head. He didn't kill out of rage. Not out of hatred. He said he killed 17 men because he wanted to keep them. That the obsession grew until skulls and skeletons weren't enough. Then came cannibalism. Spoken the same way a normal man would describe a habit he couldn't shake. He asked for several breaks during filming. His hands wouldn't stay still the entire time. Fourteen months after this interview, another inmate killed him in prison. When asked what he deserved, Dahmer didn't hesitate for a second. "I deserve death," he said. Some people are beyond saving. Some things wear a human face and never were one. Was there ever a version of this story that ended differently?
Charles Manson ordered 9 murders in two nights in August 1969. One victim was Sharon Tate - actress, wife of Roman Polanski, 8 months pregnant. The case broke every courtroom record in California history. Netflix spent $65 million on productions tied to his name. Quentin Tarantino built a $375 million film around the night of the murders. He was denied parole 12 times and died in prison in 2017. This is parole hearing number 12. Corcoran State Prison. March 27th, 1997. In the video below, the most dangerous cult leader in American history sits across from the parole board - and what comes out of his mouth is something no one in that room was prepared for. The board reads the facts. Nine murders. Two nights. A pregnant woman stabbed to death on Cielo Drive. He listens, then says the report is "a little distorted." Then he starts talking. He says he's still 10 years old on the inside. That his mother dropped him off with Irish Catholic monks as a child. That his grandmother was a First World War sharpshooter from Kentucky with a long rifle. That he's a rebel boy from Tennessee and California never understood him. Then he mentions Ronnie Reagan riding a wheelchair on fire in a nuclear submarine coming back from China. The board stares at him. This is a man whose followers killed for him without hesitation. Who convinced a group of young Americans that he was Jesus Christ. Who turned a California commune into a murder machine and called it Helter Skelter. In that room in 1997 he looked like anything but a monster. That was always the most terrifying thing about him. Was Manson a criminal genius who played insane, or did the prison system spend 50 years housing a man who genuinely lost his mind?
August 6, 1945. A 29 year old engineer is walking to work in Hiroshima on the last day of a three month business trip. He's packed. He's going home to his wife and baby son tomorrow. He looks up and sees a bomber high overhead. Something small falls from it. Then the sky turns white. His name was Tsutomu Yamaguchi. He designed oil tankers for Mitsubishi, and he'd been sent to Hiroshima to work at the company's shipyard. He was about two miles from where the bomb exploded. The blast threw him off his feet. It burst his eardrums. It burned the left side of his upper body, his face and arms. For a while he couldn't see. He spent the night in an air raid shelter in a city that no longer existed. The next morning, badly burned, he found two of his coworkers who had also survived. Together they made their way through the ruins to a train station and got on one of the few trains still running. They were going home. Home was Nagasaki. He got back on August 8, covered in bandages. His family barely recognized him. Doctors treated his burns. Most people would have stayed in bed. On August 9, Yamaguchi reported to work. He was sitting in the Mitsubishi office in Nagasaki, telling his boss what had happened in Hiroshima. How one bomb had wiped out an entire city. According to Yamaguchi, his boss told him that was impossible. That he must be out of his mind. And at that moment, through the window, the room filled with the same white light. The second atomic bomb had just exploded over Nagasaki. Once again, Yamaguchi was about two miles away. The blast tore the bandages off his burns. The office was wrecked. And somehow, again, he lived. He rushed home terrified of what he'd find. His house was destroyed. But his wife and son had survived too. They had gone out looking for burn ointment for him and were sheltering in a tunnel when the bomb hit. Treating his injuries from the first bomb may have saved them from the second. He was sick for a long time. His hair fell out. He had fevers and infections. But he recovered. He went back to work, raised a family, and lived a normal life for decades. He rarely talked about it publicly. Hundreds of people are believed to have lived through both bombings. But in 2009, the Japanese government officially recognized Yamaguchi as a survivor of both, the only person ever formally given that status. Late in life he finally started speaking out against nuclear weapons. He even addressed the United Nations. He died in 2010 at the age of 93. He was hit by the only two atomic bombs ever used in war. And he outlived the century they were dropped in.
May 5, 1945. Hitler has been dead for five days. The war in Europe is almost over. In a castle in the Austrian Alps, American soldiers, German soldiers, and a group of elderly French prisoners grab rifles and get ready to fight the SS. Together. The castle was called Schloss Itter. The Nazis had turned it into a prison for very important people. Not ordinary prisoners. Trophies. Inside were two former prime ministers of France, Paul Reynaud and Édouard Daladier. Two of France's top generals, Maxime Weygand and Maurice Gamelin. A famous tennis champion, Jean Borotra. And the older sister of Charles de Gaulle. As the Reich collapsed in early May, the SS guards panicked and ran. The prisoners suddenly found themselves in charge of a castle, with weapons left behind, and a serious problem. Waffen-SS units were still roaming the area. Fanatics who would gladly kill them all. They needed help. Fast. One of the castle's prisoners, a Yugoslav handyman, slipped out on a bicycle to find the Americans. Separately, a German army officer named Major Josef Gangl also went looking for them. Gangl was a Wehrmacht officer who had turned against the Nazis and was secretly working with the Austrian resistance. He wanted to protect the prisoners too. He found an American tank commander named Captain Jack Lee. Lee was 27, tough, cigar chewing, and willing to do something insane. With a single Sherman tank and a handful of American soldiers, he drove up into the mountains alongside Gangl and a few of his German troops. They reached the castle on May 4. The French prisoners were not exactly thrilled to see a tiny rescue force. They had expected an army. Instead they got a few Americans, a few Germans, and one tank. The next morning, the SS attacked. Somewhere between 100 and 150 Waffen-SS troops hit the castle with machine guns, mortars, and anti-tank weapons. The defenders fought back from the walls and windows. Americans and Germans side by side. The French prisoners refused to hide. Some of them, including Reynaud, picked up weapons and joined in. The Sherman tank was knocked out. The defenders were running out of ammunition. It looked like the castle would fall. Then Jean Borotra, the tennis star, volunteered to make a run for it. He jumped the wall, slipped past the SS, and sprinted through the countryside to find American reinforcements. He found them. And he insisted on coming back with them to finish the fight. During the battle, Major Gangl saw Paul Reynaud exposed to gunfire and moved to pull him to safety. A sniper shot Gangl dead. He had survived the whole war as a German soldier, only to die defending French prisoners from the SS in its final days. That afternoon, the American relief force arrived and broke the attack. The SS were scattered and captured. The prisoners were saved. Jack Lee received the Distinguished Service Cross. In Austria, Josef Gangl is remembered as a hero, and a street is named after him. It is believed to be the only battle of the war where American and German soldiers fought together on the same side.
The story of the last Japanese soldier is well known throughout the world. The last German to surrender was Georg Gärtner. Georg Gärtner was captured in 1943 by British troops in Tunis while serving in the Afrika Korps. He was transferred to the United States as a prisoner of war. At the end of the war, Gärtner feared being repatriated to his hometown of Schweidnitz in Lower Silesia, which had by then become a Polish city under communist rule. He decided to escape. On September 22, 1945, he escaped from the prisoner-of-war camp in Deming, New Mexico, by jumping aboard a freight train. This train took him to California. Gärtner then moved from town to town along the West Coast of the United States. He worked as a lumberjack, dishwasher, and laborer. He improved his English, adopted a new identity as Dennis F. Whiles, obtained a Social Security card, and fabricated a biography in which he claimed to have grown up in a Connecticut orphanage after the accidental death of his parents. He eventually settled in Norden, California, where he worked as a ski instructor in the winter and in construction or sales in the summer. It was there that he met Jean Clarke, whom he married in 1964. He adopted her two children from a previous marriage. Throughout this time, the American military continued its search. For forty years, Gärtner remained on the FBI's list of most wanted individuals. However, American authorities considered him to pose no threat, believing he was merely trying to avoid being sent back to Eastern Europe—not out of loyalty to defeated Germany, but out of fear of the new regime. Although Gärtner led a quiet life, his wife grew increasingly worried by his refusal to discuss his past. In 1984, when she threatened to leave him, he confessed the whole truth to her. At her insistence, he decided to make his story public. The following year, he contacted historian Arnold Krammer, a renowned expert on German prisoners of war in the United States. Together, they published a book titled Hitler's Last Soldier in America. Gärtner became famous overnight. He was invited onto several television programs, including The Today Show, where he symbolically "surrendered" to host Bryant Gumbel. The income generated by the book sales ensured him a degree of financial independence. When he came forward, the American government found itself facing a legal vacuum. Gärtner was not an illegal immigrant, since he had been brought to the United States against his will. He had not escaped from a prison in the strict sense, since prisoners of war were, in principle, supposed to be released and repatriated. And because his escape had taken place after the official end of hostilities, it was uncertain whether he would still be considered a prisoner of war in the legal sense. No charges were filed. The FBI stated it no longer had any interest in him, and immigration officials confirmed they had no intention of deporting him. Gärtner was invited to apply for U.S. citizenship. After several years of application, he was naturalized in November 2009. He devoted the end of his life to his passion for painting. Georg Gärtner passed away in 2013 in Loveland, Colorado.

Why did North Korea invade the South in 1950? It wasn't random. Kim Il Sung had been begging for permission for over a year. In 1945, the US and Soviet Union split Korea in half at the 38th Parallel as a temporary measure after Japan's surrender. By 1948, it had hardened into two rival governments: Kim Il Sung's communist North and Syngman Rhee's anti-communist South. Both men wanted the whole country. Both talked openly about unifying Korea by force. In 1949, border clashes along the parallel killed thousands. But Kim couldn't move without Stalin. His army was Soviet-trained and Soviet-equipped. So he asked. And asked again. Through 1949, he kept pushing Moscow for approval. Stalin kept saying no. He didn't want a war with America. Then 1949 changed everything. In June, the last US combat troops left South Korea. In August, the Soviets tested their first atomic bomb. In October, Mao won the Chinese Civil War. And in January 1950, US Secretary of State Dean Acheson gave a speech laying out America's defensive line in the Pacific. Korea wasn't mentioned in it. Stalin read the signs. In the spring of 1950, he finally gave Kim the green light, on one condition: Mao had to back it too. Kim flew to Beijing in May and got Mao's blessing. Kim promised a quick war. He claimed the South was ready to collapse, and that hundreds of thousands of communists there would rise up the moment his army crossed the border. Soviet advisers helped draft the invasion plan. Soviet tanks led the attack. On June 25, 1950, Kim got his war. The uprising never came. America did.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré is the interim president and military leader of Burkina Faso, having seized power during a coup d'état on September 30, 2022... Captain Ibrahim Traoré stood before his people and broke a silence that has lasted for over a thousand years. He spoke about the Arab slave trade. Not in whispers. Not in academic papers. But out loud, in a televised address, to a nation that is overwhelmingly Muslim. "The people came, first the Arab-Muslim conquests. That is over a thousand years of slavery in Africa." He did not stop there. He spoke of men castrated so they could not father children. He said the last slave market did not close until 1962, in Medina. This is not an attack on Islam. Traoré is a Muslim himself. This is an attack on a historical crime that has been buried while the transatlantic slave trade is discussed everywhere. He is saying what the entire continent has been afraid to say: that Africa was enslaved by two systems, and only one of them is allowed to be remembered. The reaction was immediate. Gulf states were furious. Some Muslim clerics called it Islamophobic. But Traoré was not finished. He also announced that Burkina Faso would recall hundreds of students studying Sharia law in Arab countries, warning that some return with teachings incompatible with national cohesion. He said the state is secular, and no religious law—including Islamic law—will govern it. Why does this matter? Because the Sahel is burning. Jihadist groups are killing civilians, and the ideology they use to recruit is a distorted version of the same faith that Traoré himself practices. He is not blaming Islam. He is blaming a radicalism that was imported, funded, and spread from outside Africa. By naming the Arab slave trade, he is severing the spiritual authority that foreign clerics have held over African Muslims for centuries. He asked one question repeatedly during that speech, a question that should be printed on every African schoolbook: "Are we cursed?" His answer is no. Africa is not cursed. Africa was conquered, colonized, and enslaved by two different systems. One from the West, one from the East. And the only way to break the curse is to name it, teach it, and refuse to let it be silenced any longer. #archaeohistories
A former American prisoner of war unexpectedly encountered one of his wartime torturers inside the Sears, Roebuck department store in Los Angeles, CA in October 1946. Tomoya Kawakita was born in California to immigrant parents. He lived there until age 18 when he and his father traveled to Japan in 1939. Kawakita stayed there for the duration of the war. In 1943 he was hired as an English interpreter at a metal refinery near the Oeyama mine. The plant used English-speaking prisoners of war to mine and transport nickel ore. Kawakita was well-known and much feared by the POWs at Oeyama. As a student of jiu jitsu, he would use the exhausted prisoners as practice dummies. He brutalized them in a variety of ways and was responsible for the death of US Marine Corps Private Einar Latvala. When the war ended, Kawakita was able to renew his American passport at the US consulate, claiming he’d only registered as a Japanese citizen under duress at the behest of the Japanese government. He returned to California in mid-1946 and enrolled in classes at the University of Southern California. But just weeks later, a survivor of the Bataan death march and former prisoner at Oeyama named William L. Bruce was shopping with his wife for a lawnmower in the Sears, Roebuck store in Los Angeles when he bumped into Kawakita inside. He followed Kawakita outside and took down his license plate number. Bruce later testified, “When I saw his face, I went limp inside. It was Oeyama all over again and Kawakita was standing there with the bamboo pole, and I was too weak to do any more than take it.” Bruce contacted the FBI who arrested Kawakita eight months later following an extensive investigation. He was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death in September 1948. However, President Eisenhower later commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, and in 1963 President Kennedy ordered him released from prison, and removed to Japan. Kawakita lived out the remainder of his life in Japan. #japan #ww2history #sears #prisoner #treason
This photo shows US Navy sailors standing guard aboard the Japanese battleship Nagato in the days following Japan's surrender in August 1945. Nagato holds the distinction of being the first battleship in the world to mount 16-inch guns. On August 30, 1945, American sailors took control of the ship, a symbolic moment marking the surrender of the Imperial Japanese Navy. By war's end, Nagato was the last Japanese battleship still afloat. Her story ended at Bikini Atoll in July 1946, when she was sunk as a target during the US atomic bomb tests.
