Is it acceptable when school teachers are mentally ill, if the mental illness has effects on social behavior and understanding of human relationships, or influences how teachers model the mind of children they interact with? Is there sufficient screening for such effects?

@Plinz Yes & Yes. There are illnesses that disqualify one from teaching, they are largely screened. Judgements about mental models, especially those rooted in conceptions of illness, tend to be projections of power rather than evaluations of effective teaching.
@tiburke I think that children will generally not be able to understand the mechanism of a dysfunction, but if they develop healthily they will often be able to understand and reflect on them as adults.
