1/2 The theft of the Irish Crown Jewels from Dublin Castle, in 1907, was a sensation throughout the British Empire. It wasn’t only because of the glamour of the objects and wealth of those involved but for the salacious gay scandal the investigation exposed at the heart of Anglo-Irish power. King Edward II treasures consisted of the fist sized Star of St Patrick, which had fifty Brazilian diamonds, a magnificent emerald shamrock, and a ruby cross upon shining blue enamel. There was also a badge made of rubies, emeralds, and silver. The ceremonial bling was worn at functions of the Order of St. Patrick presented to the Order by King William IV in 1831. Despite the efforts of investigators, the jewels have still never been recovered. Conspiracists initially thought it was a Unionist plot to disrupt Home Rule, or Republicans trying to ransom the priceless treasure to raise funds or simply shame the Brits. But as the investigation evolved, the smart money went on an inside job. Fingers pointed at a gay “secret society" within Dublin Castle. This ring was accused of organising everything from orgies to drunken private tours of restricted places, and it seems grand jewel heists. Rumours of this club leaked to the general public via the newspapers of the day, bolstered by headlines of cover-ups, shocking dismissals, and payoffs of witnesses. In 1905, changes inside the Order of St. Patrick necessitated that the jewels be shifted to a safe in the strong room of the Office of Arms in Dublin Castle. They would be under the supervision of serving Ulster King of Arms, Sir Arthur Vicars. Vicars was assisted by other lower ranking members of the Order, one of whom was his alleged live-in lover, Frank Shackleton. Frank was the younger brother of the famous polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Frank was awarded the honorary post of Dublin Herald by his housemate, Sir Arthur Vicars. During this move to the strong room in the Bedford Tower of Dublin castle, it was discovered that the safe containing the jewels was too large to fit through the door. Castle authorities decided to leave the safe in the ornate library of the tower whilst a smaller safe was obtained. The gemstones were last seen on 11th June 1907. On 3rd July, an innocent cleaning lady found a door in the secure tower unlocked and raised the alarm. It was noted that Sir Arthur Vicars acted in a very blasé manner, ill befitting the blind panic a custodian would be expected to express. A few days later, on Saturday, 6th July, the same cleaning lady observed the strong room door was open .When she informed Vicars, the information was again met with bizarre indifference. Later that day, Vicars uncharacteristically asked another member of staff to deposit something in the safe and gave him the key. This breach of protocol was highly suspicious in itself. Combined with the previous nonchalance, it might appear that somebody wanted to imply that security was lax, perhaps foreshadowing for a robbery. When the shocked man checked the safe, he found it was ransacked and the jewels gone. What’s more, because it hadn’t been regularly checked, the burglary could have taken place weeks before. To add to the pandemonium, this was just four days before King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were due to visit Ireland to take part in a ceremony involving the missing treasures! A police investigation concluded that the safe hadn’t been broken. It had been unlocked with one of the custodian keys. This levelled suspicion on laid-back Vicars plus a handful of other possible suspects. Among these was the aforementioned Frank Shackleton. Vicars was notoriously fond of the gargle and had a reputation for drinking on overnight security duty. Rumour had it that he woke up one morning with an incredible hangover to discover he had decided to drunkenly model the jewels around his neck!
