Hong Kong's biggest pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily is being forced to close after police raided its office, froze its assets and arrested staff. It is the first time China's new security law was used against the media. A reader says it means "there is no press freedom."

1. Most of you may not understand how dreadful the closure of Apple Daily means to Hong Kong. Not only to its journalistic landscape, but also to the people and the city itself. This is their last day. They are going to print 1 million copies tomorrow to commerate the fight.

Inside @appledaily_hk tonight. Many staff determined to stay until the end. Many reportedly have already resigned. One journalist showed me his favourite front page. Paper expected to last only a few more days.

As midnight approaches, scores have arrived at the headquarters of Hong Kong’s Apple Daily @appledaily_hk, a popular pro-democracy newspaper that is forced to fold due to political pressure after 26 years, in the hope to show tribute to the paper.

The forced closure of @AppleDaily_HK by Hong Kong authorities is a chilling demonstration of their campaign to silence all opposition voices. It is clearer than ever that the NSL is being used to curtail freedom & punish dissent. gov.uk/government/new…

Readers of @appledaily_hk support the staff right outside the building, chanted “#AppleDaily, GaYau (Cheer Up)!” #HongKong communist govt probably think this is the best way to claim loyalty to #CCP, in fact, they told global corporations “think twice before you invest in HK.”
