Even better treatment of the horses would not prevent the next horse from spooking, running wild and killing someone. The nature of modern New York City is incompatible with forcing huge skittish prey with a hardwired flight instinct into dense traffic and a crowded chaotic park attached to open carriages. This is why there’s been dozens of violent spoken accidents in just the past few years that have resulted in serious injuries, many near fatalities, and in June the death of an 18-year-old who died trying to save his mother as she was thrown out out of an out of control horse carriage in the park. It’s a guarantee that more of these catastrophes will happen as long as the horse carriage is continue to operate. Elected officials have a duty to prevent to protect the public snd animals. That means ending Horse carriages. Cities worldwide from Mumbai, India to Philadelphia have already banned Horse carriages for this reason. It’s long overdue for New York City. The tragedy is that had it already been banned. Romanch Mahajan would be attending college in Jaipur university right now, instead his shattered family is grieving him in a totally predictable and avoidable tragedy.

We took the NYC horse drawn carriage today through Central Park and I am super sad to report that I fully agree with the ban, as the horses are currently treated I never thought I would say this - but these poor animals are actually not doing that great

It took a lot of courage for you to post this. I commend you. Our organization led the effort in banning the horse carriages. There are countless elderly and lame horses being worked, many have other untreated ailments. Some collapse and die as a result. A complete lack of grazing on pasture with other horses and no and freedom of movement means their basic needs are not getting met either. Being forced into chaotic traffic and a crowded park filled with frightening stimuli is a recipe for more catastrophic crashes and disasters. The good news is that there are rescue farms and sanctuary lined up for every carriage horse so that they can finally run free. 🙏🏽

We recognize that voting yes to ban the horse carriages was a bold act on the part of Council Members, and we are appreciative of them for exhibiting the courage it took to do so. Especially @CMMercedesCD46 and @CnDelarosa, lifelong fighters for workers, who we know will ensure the plan that’s developed provides for a just transition for all.

@empathyhawk @KennyTorrella If it were done to dogs or cats it would be criminal animal cruelty. Ducks aren’t dogs or cats either, but they are all sentient beings who feel pain.

President Trump sort of inadvertently made an argument for banning horse carriages from Central Park on Thursday when he criticized the City Council's 40-7-2 vote to end the Central Park horse carriage industry with an ill-conceived analogy to cars. buff.ly/telGm7h

@kellykeegs @nicolegelinas And @VickieforNYC @JimGennaro @JoannAriola32 said these heartless things minimizing the death of 18 year old Romanch Mahajan while the Mahajan family sat there crying a few feet away on the chambers floor, clutching pictures of Romanch. It doesn’t get any lower than that.
