First time back in Tel Aviv since this hall wasn’t filled with images of hostages. I’m here to cover the election which has been billed as one of the most important in Israel’s history. There was a moment when the plane landed (after everyone applauded which they always do) and we were on the coach to get to the terminal. An older Jewish Israeli lady stood up and gave her seat to an Arab Israeli lady who was carrying a baby in her arms - it was a reminder of how far the real Israel is from the visions of haters. On Tuesday nearly 2million Arabs in Israel will have a chance to vote in this election. They are the only Arabs in the Middle East who get to vote.

Breaking: Final Israeli pre-election polls in three major TV channels: • Netanyahu coalition parties win 50 out of 120 Knesset seats. • The Bloc for Change gets 52-56 seats. • Eisenkot favored over Netanyahu as national leader by 6-10% gap. • The Arab parties (including Abbas’s party Raam with Jewish former police officer and MK Segalovitz) are projected to score about 16 seats. • Small non-bloc parties may or may not get the threshold of 4 seats. ==> My take: • Eisenkot and his partners will need the Arab parties to back them; hopefully as full coalition members rather than supportive outsiders. • The predicted 50 Netanyahu bloc seats are not what I would have liked in the aftermath of 7 October, but not all of its voters are bibists. The ultra Orthodox parties have their separate agenda. Eisenkot’s party scores better than Likud. • The polls can be very wrong, in either direction. And so much can still happen before and during 27 October. • The great election odyssey I mentioned in an earlier tweet, 70K Israelis flocking from abroad to vote, is of course not included in the polls. • For liberal democracy and some horizon for peace, this is probably the last stand. In 2004, I was asked by Tony Blair to help investigate the rise of antisemitism in Britain. We made recommendations then, yet more than 20 years later, we are still confronting the same hatred. Every generation seems to rediscover the problem, make recommendations and then watch as antisemitism erupts again. The Green Party’s disgraceful conference motion is part of that problem. Isolate them, blame them, attack them, ban them. We have seen where this leads before. Every school should teach Pastor Niemöller’s warning: “Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me.” History has warned us of the consequences of silence. It is not enough to condemn antisemitism after it erupts. We must challenge it wherever it takes root, whoever is responsible, and ensure the next generation understands why. Silence is not an option.

A former UN official just said what the world needed to hear. Alice Jill Edwards served as the UN's Independent Expert on torture from 2022 to 2026. She spent her career defending Palestinian refugees, led proceedings before Europe's highest court to protect them. And yet, in a bombshell opinion piece in Britain's Daily Telegraph, she accuses two of her most prominent UN colleagues - Francesca Albanese, the UN rapporteur on Palestinian territories, and Reem Alsalem, the UN rapporteur on violence against women - of deliberately ignoring Hamas's sexual violence on October 7, 2023, calling their conduct one-sided, politically motivated, and a betrayal of the victims. "They never formally documented these horrors, despite the growing body of evidence which to most of us is indisputable, but which they dispute." She also takes direct aim at UN Secretary-General António Guterres, saying he has "failed to carry out the original mandate of the UN" and adopted a "fatalistic posture" while wars rage around the world. When Edwards published her own report on October 7, only one other UN special rapporteur agreed to sign it. Others refused. Some tried to have material removed entirely. This is not coming from Israel. This is coming from inside the UN itself.

The massive, independent review into antisemitism in UK schools and colleges has come out today. There are a lot of statistics given by the study that I could throw at you, but I think I'll highlight one particularly horrific one. Amongst secondary teachers who teach about the Holocaust, 40% reported encountering antisemitism among their students, usually in the form of mocking the way Jews look and our "greed." So, as students were learning about the Holocaust, seeing the pictures of dead Jews in piles on the ground, they would make these kinds of comments. Not only that, but a main part of the survey is investigating how antisemitism is not widely understood by teachers and how it often goes greatly underreported because incidents will, more often than not, be downplayed or not understood as antisemitism. So 40% is probably not even the accurate number. With the study comes 27 recommendations to reform the education system in the UK. These recommendations include adopting a clear definition of antisemitism, editing the Teacher's Standards to include antisemitism as a kind of hatred and prejudice that teachers must confront, training teachers in identifying antisemitism, and more. I really hope these recommendations are implemented, because antisemitism is awful enough for an adult to deal with, children shouldn't be facing it on their own.

491 days alone on the frontline. He amputated his own leg with a knife to survive. And when all hope seemed lost, a drone came to bring him home. This is the extraordinary story of Ukrainian soldier Kostiantyn Vlasenko. Imagine a concrete drainage pipe in almost-occupied territory. Two soldiers inside. Then there is only one left. Without legs. With no hope that anyone will come for him. And so it goes, month after month. Kostiantyn Vlasenko, from Kryvyi Rih, volunteered to fight. He had to beg for a long time just to be called up. He was assigned to a position known as “Vertun” — a concrete drainage pipe converted into a shelter. He and his comrade held it for months. Until one day, his comrade was killed — on his 50th birthday, February 16. Kostiantyn was left alone. The enemy knew he was there. They dropped a speaker playing a recording telling him to surrender. His own side would never save him, they said. A white drone would come for him and take him home. Kostiantyn answered over the radio: “russian warship, go fuck yourself.” And stayed at his position. Then came the explosive drops from enemy drones. His left leg was badly injured, and he twisted his right. His legs began to die. The flesh on his left foot rotted away on its own. He amputated his right foot himself — with a knife, resting it on a brick. “Tears were running down my face. It had to be cut off. So I cut it off,” he recalled. Later, he joked to his commander: “Congratulate me — I no longer have flat feet or size 44 shoes.” When the weather warmed up, he crawled to where his legs had been left behind. There, he saw orange-and-black butterflies swarming around them. “I thought: God, butterflies have come out of my legs, too.” It sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel. And that is no metaphor. His wife had sent him King's The Outsider in a care package. The book helped keep him going, along with thoughts of his daughter, Khrystyna. Then came the rescue. A drone flew in to bring Kostiantyn home alive. The pilot dropped instructions. The drone landed and shut down its engines. Kostiantyn clipped himself on with a carabiner, gave the camera an OK sign and a heart, and took off. As they flew over a river, he feared only one thing: that they would be shot down and he would fall into the water. He couldn't swim. Other drones provided cover. The enemy shot one of them down. But Kostiantyn made it. 491 days at his position. Both legs lost. A drone sent to bring him home alive. And a man who still doesn't consider himself a hero. He says: “I don't like being first. I'd rather be second.” He is alive. He is back on solid ground. His heroism and his story will live on forever.

Camilla Long’s brilliant description of Sally Rooney’s opportunism describes how she has become a poster child for a cultural sector who know nothing of any real political struggle but are perfectly at ease aligning with a protest movement that does not move the dial one inch on Palestinian self-determination, and is not a peace or human rights movement. It is antizionism stripped of its pretences: the glorification of violence against Jews. If this sounds extreme, then explain why Palestine Action's co-founder, Calla Walsh has been living in Beirut for the last year and is actively engaging in propaganda and information-warfare operations on behalf of the Iranian regime and Hezbollah. How does Rooney justify the violence meted out to a police officer whose spine was smashed by a sledgehammer, wielded by a member of Palestine Action? Or will she simply deflect and tell us that the 'real' crime is in Gaza? There are myriad organisations that Rooney could support in order to show solidarity and actually promote dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis. For example, The Parents Circle brings together the parents on both sides whose children have been murdered in this conflict. Or does the absence of violent protest offend Rooney’s Marxist sensibilities? The profoundly challenging history of the Middle East requires in-depth reading. It is not a subject that can be grasped, let alone lectured on by anyone whose only qualifications appear to be informed by a Ladybird book knowledge hitched onto celebrity-inflated self-importance. Her grandstanding on an issue whose complexities she neither understands nor could possibly have experienced does enormous damage to those of us doing the real work of conflict resolution, those of us with real connections to this conflict. 🔗 in replies

Hamas's willingness to exploit Gazan civilians knows no bounds. An April 2024 document discovered by IDF troops revealed a Hamas plan to plant explosives in displaced persons camps in Gaza. Why? Because Hamas terrorists were hiding in the camps, and needed to create a smokescreen to flee as IDF troops approached. Hamas hides among Gazan civilians and is willing to kill them to protect its own operatives.

If any of you think it’s easy to live under Islamic republic or Taliban just listened to their stories. These women are not fighting for themselves. They are fighting to protect democracy everywhere from the most dangerous cancer, which is called Islamism.
