I am SO ANGRY about this campaign and so should everyone who sees it, is a #carer, has #dementia, works in the field or is just a fecking human bloody being @alzheimerssoc you should know, and do, better. My MIL watching it (early stages) was in tears. 'But I'm not dead'.

Dear @alzheimerssoc, the thing about people who are dead, is that there is no reason to treat them well, or treat them at all,to save them, to help them, to love them, or even at it's extreme, to let them live. Discourses are important. They shape (and cost) lives. #DoBetter
So much to unpick about this statement, and to be honest little of it is good. But here’s some quick thoughts. 1/n

I don't think this justifies the film. It may be how family can see dementia-and it is so awful to be in that place-but we need to resist the narrative. If we only see people as partially alive, we will only treat them as partially human. Says me. (Well, and Tom Kitwood).

Lots I could say about the @alzheimerssoc film that everyone is talking about. This is one example from LinkedIn. If you want to watch the far more balanced @DementiaUK film that I reference, it’s here: youtu.be/tnEEWzNs19A?si…

I find it hard to understand why the @alzheimerssoc have done this but is wrong on so many levels and so I’ll-informed. Has the whole public health approach to ‘living well with dementia’ completely passed them by? @AboutDementiaSc @BoldScotland @YunHeeJeon1 @BrainMind_Usyd

I really enjoy educating. But if any of my students refuse to toilet and clean a patient because it’s “not their job”, they won’t be coming back on placement the next day.
A very important list of things that antipsychotic medication DOES NOT help people living with #dementia to address or reduce: ‼️ Distress during personal care ‼️Repetitive vocalisations ‼️Walking around ‼️Social withdrawal ‼️ Disinhibitions

A week ago today, my friend @WendyPMitchell ended her life by voluntary stopping eating & drinking (VSED). She was forced to go through this process because we have no legislation on assisted dying. We currently demand people suffer when we could give them a dignified death.

Dr Wendy Mitchell 1956 - 2024. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the incredible campaigner and writer, Dr Wendy Mitchell, who sadly passed away last week after living with dementia for almost a decade. @WendyPMitchell journalofdementiacare.co.uk/wendy-mitchell…

Wendy was an incredible advocate for others living with dementia and spoke nationally on the issue inc on @lorraine w/ @clbleakley in 2018. She also met regularly with @YorkMandV @Innov_Dementia. @dignityindying have backed her calls for a review (2/2) @itvcalendar
As I say at the end of this clip, @WendyPMitchell has been immortalised through her books. She will ALWAYS be there to take people by the hand and guide them through their dementia diagnosis, or indeed through difficult conversations about end of life. I am so proud of her. ❤️

Going through fertility treatments is one of the loneliest experiences of my life.
Someone asked me once ‘How is your burden?’ It was like a punch in the gut & it took me a second or two to realise they were talking about my Mum. There were many loses along the way but her life had meaning until the day she died. And she only died once. Language matters.
Our new TV advert isn’t an easy watch, but we know it shows a reality that resonates with a lot of people. If you have questions about why we’ve made it and how we worked with people directly affected by dementia, please take a look here: alzheimers.org.uk/news/2024-03-2…
I don't think this justifies the film. It may be how family can see dementia-and it is so awful to be in that place-but we need to resist the narrative. If we only see people as partially alive, we will only treat them as partially human. Says me. (Well, and Tom Kitwood).

My Grandad and I went on 3 cruises when he was in his late 80s and I was in my 20s. We had a ball. I found out he really loved music with loud beats, loved YMCA and karaoke- we were the last in the disco every night. We visited loads of countries, it was great… 1/3
We'll be there for you. Again, and again, and again 💙
To anyone emotionally affected by the awful @alzheimerssoc advert; I introduce my great Grandma, 96 years young and living with #Dementia. Yes at times she forgets and gets anxious, down, frustrated etc. But she very much lives and we haven’t ‘lost’ her. No eulogy here thanks 😊
Lots of families want to know what they can do to support their loved ones living with dementia- one of the most important things, is to support them to keep doing what they love 💙🥹 #dementia #personcentredcare
Leslie is 98 years old and has dementia - this is what football still means to him ❤️
It felt pertinent that at the start of #NutritionAndHydrationWeek a resident was struggling to focus on his drink today 🍹🍺🍷🧋 All it took was a quick toast & a “cheers” and there went two cups of tea 😊 Creativity - 1 Dementia - 0
A very important list of things that antipsychotic medication DOES NOT help people living with #dementia to address or reduce: ‼️ Distress during personal care ‼️Repetitive vocalisations ‼️Walking around ‼️Social withdrawal ‼️ Disinhibitions
Antipsychotics used too often as a first-line response to difficult behaviour in #dementia (most often agitation) rather than as a considered second-line treatment when other non-pharmacological approaches have failed via @NHSEngland england.nhs.uk/london/wp-cont… #BGSconf
A week ago today, my friend @WendyPMitchell ended her life by voluntary stopping eating & drinking (VSED). She was forced to go through this process because we have no legislation on assisted dying. We currently demand people suffer when we could give them a dignified death.
'We could just follow their example. It's so much easier than people are making it sound because it exists already.' Dame Esther Rantzen has made a fresh call for a vote on legalising assisted dying. Esther's daughter Rebecca Wilcox says the 'UK is lagging behind'.
Motivated by Wendy's life and legacy, I feel more determined than ever to work hard to improve services for all living with young onset dementia. Wendy was a courageous force for good and brought wisdom, a positive spirit and a dose of reality to the Young Dementia Network.
It has taken us time to process our profound sadness at the news that @WendyPMitchell has died. An ardent #dementia campaigner and much valued member of the @YoungDemNetwork steering group, Wendy was a truly inspirational woman. Following her dementia diagnosis aged 58 in 2014,…
I’m delighted to announce my conferment to Reader in Dementia Care and Inclusion. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work over the years @wlv_uni @wlvnursing
