The British army once sentenced Daniel Morgan to 500 lashes, a punishment that usually killed a man, for the crime of knocking out an officer who struck him. He survived every stroke. And he spent the rest of his life joking that the drummer had miscounted and only given him 499, so the British still owed him one. He collected that debt at a place called Cowpens. Morgan was not born to anything. He was a rough, barely educated frontiersman who made his living hauling freight by wagon on the Virginia frontier, a big, powerful, hot-tempered young man. During the French and Indian War, serving as a civilian teamster with the British army, a British lieutenant struck him with the flat of a sword. Morgan answered with his fist and dropped the officer cold. For a colonial to strike a British officer was close to a capital offense, and the court-martial sentenced him to five hundred lashes with the cat-o'-nine-tails, a flogging meant to flay a man and very often to kill him. They tied him up and laid it on, and Daniel Morgan did not die. He carried the ridged scars on his back for the rest of his life. But instead of breaking him, that brutal punishment forged something. It left him with a cold, permanent hatred of the British army and its contempt for colonial men like him, a hatred he would one day repay with interest. And it gave him his lifelong joke: the drummer lost count and stopped at 499, so the British, he liked to say, were still one lash short of paying him in full. When the Revolution came, that uneducated wagoner turned out to be a natural soldier of rare gifts. He raised a company of frontier riflemen, crack shots who could kill at distances that terrified British regulars, and he led them north to Saratoga, where his marksmen helped shatter Burgoyne's army and win the turning-point victory of the war. Morgan had a feel for battle that trained European officers lacked, an instinct for ground, for timing, and above all for the men he led. He understood that his militia were not professional soldiers and could not be asked to do what professionals did, so instead of cursing them for it, he built his tactics around what they could do. That genius reached its peak at the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781, one of the most perfectly fought battles in American history. Facing the dreaded Banastre Tarleton, Morgan set a trap built entirely on human nature. He put his unreliable militia in the front line and asked them only for two volleys, then permission to fall back, which they gladly did. Tarleton's British, seeing the Americans retreat, charged forward in a confident rush straight into Morgan's real line of hardened Continentals, and then Morgan sprang the jaws, hitting the British on both flanks at once in a double envelopment while his cavalry rode down their rear. In minutes Tarleton's command was destroyed, hundreds killed and captured, one of the most crushing and complete victories of the war, and Tarleton himself barely escaped. It was the frontier wagoner out-generaling the darlings of the British army. So the debt was paid. The boy they tried to flog to death grew up to be the man who methodically dismantled the British in the field, who understood soldiers because he had been treated like dirt as one, and who turned the hard lessons of his own back into some of the finest tactics the Revolution ever saw. Remember Daniel Morgan. The British gave him 499 lashes and made an enemy who never forgot, and he collected the last one at Cowpens, with interest.
Stop scrolling. Sixty-six years after World War II, look what happened inside the belly of this American warship. March 15, 2011. In Hokkaido, Northern Japan, 300 elite rescue troops and 90 heavy disaster vehicles of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (5th Brigade) were engines-running, ready to save lives in tsunami-ravaged Tohoku. There was just one devastating problem: The tsunami had crippled the civilian ferries and ports across the Tsugaru Strait. Three hundred Japanese rescuers and their heavy trucks were trapped on an island while thousands of survivors were dying in the mud just across the water. Never in history had Japanese military troops and vehicles been transported inside a United States Navy warship into an active operation. Diplomats said the legal paperwork alone would take weeks. Commander Johnapon, captain of the dock landing ship USS Tortuga, didn't have weeks. People were freezing NOW. The USS Tortuga cranked its boilers to full power and steamed straight through icy seas to Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido. It dropped its massive steel stern gate. And for the first time since two nations fought each other across the Pacific, American sailors waved olive-drab Japanese military trucks straight into the heart of a US warship! In record time, ninety Japanese rescue vehicles and nearly three hundred Japanese soldiers packed every square foot of the Tortuga's well deck. And how did your American sailors treat those Japanese troops during the rough, freezing voyage south? Your sailors gave up their own mess tables so the Japanese soldiers could eat hot meals first. In the hallways of the ship, young American seamen and Japanese soldiers who didn't share a single word of language swapped unit patches off their chests and gripped each other's forearms like blood brothers. When the steel ramp dropped at Ominato, those 90 trucks roared straight off the American ship and charged into the disaster zone to save thousands. Sixty-six years earlier, our grandfathers met across the Pacific in fire and blood. In 2011, their grandsons stood inside the same steel hull, united to save human lives. Don't ever let anyone tell you America doesn't know how to turn former enemies into eternal brothers. 🇺🇸🚢🇯🇵
The sputtering roar of the single-engine Cessna abruptly died. Then came the sickening crunch of metal shearing through the dense, prehistoric canopy of the Colombian Amazon. May 1, 2023. A small plane crashed nose-first into the remote jungle. The pilot and the mother died on impact. Emerging from the twisted, smoking wreckage into the merciless rainforest were four children: Thirteen-year-old Lesly. Nine-year-old Soleiny. Four-year-old Tien. And a tiny, eleven-month-old baby named Cristin. Think about that environment. One of the deadliest jungles on planet Earth. Jaguars. Venomous pit vipers. Poisonous frogs. Torrential downpours. Swarms of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Military survival experts said an adult would struggle to last two weeks. Yet, 13-year-old Lesly didn't sit down and cry. Guided by the traditional indigenous survival skills taught to her by her grandmother, Lesly became the mother. She used strips of hair ribbons and palm fronds to build small, waterproof shelters on the jungle floor. She knew which wild seeds and cassava fruits were safe to eat. She gathered rainwater in clean leaves. And every single day, for FORTY CONSECUTIVE DAYS, Lesly held that 11-month-old baby in her arms. She chewed soft jungle fruit to feed the baby like milk. She kept the insects away from the infant's face while sleeping in pitch darkness. On June 9, after 40 days of massive military search operations, Colombian special forces heard a faint cry in the undergrowth. There they were. All four children. Alive. Lesly, skin covered in mosquito bites and jungle mud, looked up at the soldiers, still cradling the baby tight to her chest. Her first words through cracked lips: "Mommy is gone... but I took care of them." When the news broke, the entire nation of Colombia and millions around the world wept in awe. President Gustavo Petro called it: "A miracle of pure love and ancestral knowledge." Thirteen years old. The fiercest, most loving guardian this world has ever seen. 🇨🇴🌿👶
The metallic click of an assault rifle charging echoed through the high-speed passenger carriage, followed by the sight of a shirtless gunman holding an AK-47 and 300 rounds of ammunition. Five hundred terrified passengers froze in their seats, clutching their children and bracing for an inevitable massacre. The train was screaming across the French countryside at 180 miles per hour. There was no police on board. There was no escape. Twenty-three-year-old US Airman Spencer Stone was traveling on vacation with two childhood buddies, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler. Spencer was sitting in Carriage 12, dozing off in a civilian t-shirt. He opened his eyes and saw the rifle pointed down the narrow aisle, barely thirty meters away. Did he dive under a seat? Did he crawl away in fear? NOT. A. CHANCE. Spencer looked at his buddy Alek. Alek whispered two words: "Go, get him!" Without a single weapon, without body armor, Spencer leaped to his feet and SPRINTED thirty yards straight down the aisle directly into the muzzle of an assault rifle. The terrorist pulled the trigger. By the sheer grace of God, the rifle jammed. Before the gunman could rack another round, Spencer slammed into him at full sprint like an NFL linebacker, pinning him to the floor. The terrorist pulled out a box cutter and began slashing frantically at Spencer’s throat and neck. Blood was spurting across the carriage windows. The blade sliced through Spencer’s left hand, nearly severing his thumb to the bone. Spencer didn’t let go. Bleeding profusely from open gashes, he locked his bare arm around the gunman’s neck in a rear-naked choke and held on until the terrorist lost consciousness. Clint Eastwood made a feature film about it, but no Hollywood script could ever capture the raw, split-second bravery of that moment. Bare hands vs. an assault rifle. Spencer Stone didn’t just survive; he saved five hundred lives by sprinting straight toward the bullet. 🇺🇸🚄
A retired NASA engineer who had worked on the Space Shuttle program for 25 years was hired by SpaceX at age 62. He described the first week as the most disorienting experience of his professional life. At NASA, a design change required 3 meetings, 2 committees, a review board, and 6 to 18 months of documentation. At SpaceX, his new supervisor said "if it works, build it. If it doesn't, change it by Friday." He sat at his desk after the first day and called his wife. He told her he felt like a man who had been swimming with ankle weights for 25 years and someone just cut them off. He could move. He could decide. He could build something in the morning and test it in the afternoon. The constraint that he had accepted as the nature of aerospace engineering turned out to be the nature of bureaucracy. Within 6 months he had contributed to more design iterations than he had completed in his last 5 years at NASA. Not because he was working harder. Because the time between having an idea and testing the idea collapsed from months to hours. The same brain. The same knowledge. A different operating system. He described a specific moment where he proposed a modification to a Raptor engine component. At NASA, the proposal would have entered a queue. At SpaceX, the modification was machined by the end of the day and tested by the following morning. He watched his idea become a physical object in 18 hours. At NASA, 18 hours would not have been enough to schedule the first meeting to discuss whether to schedule a meeting. He told an interviewer: "I didn't get smarter when I went to SpaceX. I got faster. The intelligence was always there. The system was in the way." The difference between SpaceX and NASA is not talent. NASA has extraordinary talent. The difference is the time between a thought and a test. SpaceX compresses it. NASA elongates it. The same engineer produces 10x more at SpaceX than at NASA because the bottleneck was never the engineer. It was the meetings about the meetings about the work.
POP-POP-POP-POP-POP. Over sixty rounds of high-velocity rifle fire shredded the Saturday afternoon calm outside the Allen Premium Outlets in Texas. Shoppers carrying bags dropped everything and sprinted in sheer terror. Mothers threw their toddlers behind concrete trash cans. An AR-15-wielding madman clad in tactical body armor was systematically walking the sidewalks, executing innocent people in cold blood. A lone Allen police officer—whose name was kept private to protect his family—was in the parking lot talking to a mother and her two children about wearing seatbelts. The second the gunfire erupted, he didn't call for a SWAT perimeter. He didn't wait in his cruiser for backup. He unholstered his standard-issue 9mm service pistol, keyed his shoulder mic, and said four words: "I think we got shots fired. I'm moving." Think about that. Hundreds of terrified people were running toward him, away from the danger. This single officer ran in the EXACT OPPOSITE DIRECTION, sprinting hundreds of yards down the outdoor pedestrian mall straight toward the sound of heavy rifle fire. His body camera footage is one of the most intense, chilling records of courage in American law enforcement history. You hear his heavy breathing. You hear his sprint. You hear the cracks of the rifle getting louder and louder with every stride. He rounded the corner near a glass storefront, spotted the tactical-vested shooter, raised his handgun while fully exposed, and fired. Neutralized. From the first shot fired to the threat eliminated was barely THREE MINUTES. If that officer had waited even thirty seconds for backup, dozens more families would have been massacred. A pistol against an assault rifle. He ran into the gunfire so others could run to safety. That is what a real guardian looks like. 🇺🇸👮♂️
Bewildered question for American television networks 📺 In almost every country on Earth, advertising prescription drugs on television is strictly illegal. In the United States, you cannot watch eight minutes of football without three separate pharmaceutical companies diagnosing you with something you didn’t know existed. The visual: A radiant, smiling grandmother laughing in a field of sunflowers with a golden retriever. Soft piano music plays. Sunlight glints off crystal water. Pure cinematic bliss. Meanwhile, the voiceover accelerates into a terrifying, monotonic auctioneer sprint: *"Side effects may include nausea, liver deterioration, temporary blindness, uncontrolled weeping, spontaneous combustion of the spleen, coma, fungal infections of the teeth, and in rare cases, immediate fatal heart failure. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to this medication."* Then the grandma hugs her granddaughter, and the voice cheerful chirps: *"Ask your doctor today!"* Ask my doctor for WHAT?! The chemical weapon you just described to cure my seasonal sneezing?! Why do you broadcast cheerful death poetry between commercial breaks? 🌻💀
Bleeding question for the American healthcare system 🏥 Imagine you walk into a restaurant. You ask for a menu. The waiter smiles: "There are no prices. Eat first." You finish eating. You ask for the bill. The waiter says: "We cannot tell you. Go home." Three months later, an envelope arrives in your mailbox: - Bread basket: $480.00 - Water glass rental fee: $210.00 - Out-of-network chef who walked past your table for four seconds: $1,650.00 TOTAL DUE: $2,340.00. This sounds like a dystopian comedy sketch. Except it is literally how going to the hospital works in the United States. You can ask five different doctors, "How much will this cost?", and all five will look at you with genuine mystery, like you just asked them the location of Atlantis. Nobody knows! The hospital does not know! The insurance company does not know! The price is decided by a magical dice roll three months after you leave. Why is healthcare the only industry in the free world where you buy a product with zero idea of the price tag? 🎲💸
The world is celebrating Lionel Messi's retirement by counting trophies and goals. Hardly anyone has seen this photo. No soccer ball. No jersey. Just a 23-year-old global superstar sitting flat on a hotel carpet with a 4-year-old boy, talking about needles. In 2008, a mother in Argentina noticed something was wrong with her little boy, Tommy. Doctors brushed her off. So she spent months digging through medical papers herself until she slammed the reports on the pediatrician's desk: "My son has the same thing Messi has." The diagnosis was brutal: Growth Hormone Deficiency. The sentence: 10 years. A painful injection every single night. 3,650 needles into a 4-year-old body. How do you explain that to a toddler? She bought a poster of Messi, taped it above Tommy's bed, and told him: "Your hero took the exact same medicine to chase his dreams." Desperate to give her boy courage, she managed to track down Messi's father. On September 3, 2010, they were told to come to the team hotel in Buenos Aires. No media. No cameras. Zero PR. Just 23-year-old Messi, sitting alone in a quiet corner of the lobby. Tommy ran up and hugged him. Messi immediately dropped straight down onto the carpet, crossed his legs, and pulled the kid close. For the next 30 minutes, they did not talk about soccer once. Messi looked at him and asked, "Where do they give you the shots?" Tommy said, "In my arms." Messi nodded. "Mine were in my legs. It hurts, right? Some days you just cry. But you have to hang in there. Be patient. Everything is going to be okay." Then Messi smiled and shared a secret: "You know, when I was little, I hated being called 'The Flea.' I wanted to be a giant. But being small gave me quick feet. At your age, Tommy, I was the exact same height as you." When it was time to leave, Tommy innocently said, "We don't need a photo. Everyone bothers you for pictures, and I don't want to annoy you." Messi laughed, pulled him tight, and said: "Let's take the picture. Tomorrow, you're going to want it." Tommy's mother snapped just one photo on that carpet. Then she put the camera away. For the next 10 years, Tommy endured 3,650 injections. He never ran away from the needle once. Today, Tommy is 18, studying digital marketing, and stands at the exact same height as Lionel Messi. When Argentina finally won the World Cup, Tommy's mother watched Messi lift the trophy through tears: "People think Leo learned patience on the pitch. I know he learned it as a little boy, staring at a needle every night, waiting for his body to grow." Happy retirement to the greatest. Not just for what he did with his boots. For what he did on that carpet. 🐐
Starbase is inspiring
The future of humanity is being built right here in Starbase, Texas
A military wife was shaking at the ramp of my C-17. In one arm she held an American newborn. In the other she gripped her Japanese mother-in-law. Behind her stood her Japanese best friend of fifteen years, with that friend's three Japanese-born children. The wife looked at me and said, "They're not American citizens. Can they board? Please. Please. The reactor." I had thirty seconds to make a decision. I turned to my loadmaster. He was already waving them up the ramp. Behind him I could hear the squadron commander on the radio shouting one single order to every pilot in Yokota: "If they look at you with hope in their eyes, you put them on the plane. I don't care about their passport. I will take the court-martial. Nobody gets left behind. NOBODY." NOBODY tells Americans what the US Air Force quietly did at Yokota in late March 2011. March 17 - April 20, 2011. Operation Pacific Passage. Fukushima's reactors were still venting. The State Department had authorized voluntary departure. C-17s, C-5s, and chartered 747s were running round-the-clock evacuations. On paper: American citizens and dependents only. In reality: nobody at Yokota was going to look a crying Japanese grandmother in the eyes and say "no." Did the Air Force follow the passport-only rule? NOT. A. CHANCE. Loadmasters quietly waved aboard Japanese spouses, Japanese grandparents, Japanese best friends, Japanese daycare teachers, Japanese family dogs, and Japanese cats in carriers. Flight nurses gave their own blankets to Japanese toddlers. Pilots donated their crew meals to Japanese grandfathers who hadn't eaten properly in a week. By the end of Pacific Passage: Nearly 10,000 souls flown to safety at US bases across the Pacific. Not a single family of mixed Japanese-American heritage was separated. Not a single dog or cat was left behind. The Air Force sergeant who ran the Yokota loading desk later said: "If we had asked for passports, we would have torn families in half. Our job was to put people on planes. Not to break hearts." That is the United States Air Force. That is Operation Tomodachi you were never told about. Thank you, America. Japan will never, ever forget.
@PalmerLuckey @politico Dept of War revenue for my companies is close to a rounding error of total revenue. Probably around 3% of SpaceX’s December ARR and ~1% of all my companies combined.
The headset crackled at 2:47 AM. I was a 22-year-old airman on radio watch at Yokota Air Base. The voice on the other end was a Japanese Air Self-Defense Force pilot flying blind over Sendai in zero visibility. His fuel was critical. Every single Japanese runway in the region was flooded, cratered, or without lights. His superiors couldn't be reached. He switched from flight English to his own language and whispered one phrase into the sky: "Tasukete kudasai." — Please help me. A dozen American airmen in that tower froze. Our commander's eyes went wet. The master sergeant next to me — a 25-year veteran who had flown in Desert Storm — slammed his hand on the console and shouted so loud the headsets rattled: "LIGHT THE WHOLE DAMN RUNWAY. CLEAR EVERY STRIP WE HAVE. OUR BROTHER IS COMING HOME TONIGHT." Within 90 seconds, Yokota lit up like Las Vegas. Every available fire truck lined the runway. Every available medic was standing by. NOBODY tells Americans what happened in the radio tower at Yokota that night. March 11, 2011. 2:47 AM. 7 hours after the quake. A JASDF F-2 pilot had been airborne for hours searching for survivors. Every runway on his home island was unusable. He wasn't allowed by protocol to land at a US base without approval. Protocol was dead that night. Did Yokota tower stand on bureaucracy and send him away? NOT. A. CHANCE. They cleared him in under 90 seconds. They lit every landing light they had. They scrambled fire crews and medics in case the fuel-starved F-2 crashed short. He touched down with 60 seconds of fuel left. When he climbed down from the cockpit, the Japanese pilot — a stoic career officer twice my age — walked straight up to our master sergeant. He didn't salute. He didn't bow. He hugged him. And he wept. The master sergeant whispered back in broken Japanese: "Arigato for trusting us, brother. You are home." That is the United States Air Force. That is what "ally" actually means at 2:47 in the morning.
Absolutely. The judges responsible for repeatedly releasing violent criminals who commit horrific crimes must be impeached.
This is insanity Judges are complicit in the murder of innocent people by repeat criminals It’s not like they don’t know these facts. 60% of violent criminals released from prison return to prison with a new conviction within just a few years Hold the judges accountable
I attempted to relocate an eighty-pound granite boulder in my front yard using only my lower back and foolish pride. A gunshot cracked inside my third vertebra. I dropped to the turf like an unhorsed archer. I crawled into my house upon my elbows, dragged myself onto my mattress, and lay immobile. I spoke to no one. I sent no telegrams. A samurai suffers his infirmities in impenetrable silence. At four-fifteen in the afternoon, the front door chimes rang. I dragged my torso three feet across the floorboards to open the latch. On my porch stood Brenda, who lives across the asphalt. Brenda held a glass Pyrex dish thirteen inches wide, sealed with three layers of aluminum foil. Steam hissed from the seams like an overheating locomotive. I heard your back went out, honey, Brenda said. How did she know? Did the crows carry the signal? It is tuna noodle, Brenda continued, thrusting the five-pound nuclear furnace into my chest. Shredded cheddar, cream of mushroom, and crushed potato chips on top. Do not worry about washing the dish. Just leave it on the porch when you can crawl. She left. At five-ten, the chime sounded again. It was Susan from the corner. Susan carried an identical glass rectangle filled with chicken, broccoli, white rice, and four pounds of melted Colby-Jack. At six-oh-five, the wife of the mail carrier arrived carrying a third glass monolith containing ground beef, canned corn, and tater tots arranged in geometric battle lines beneath a lake of velveeta. By eight at night, seven glass sarcophagi were cooling on my counter. Thirty-two pounds of dense, bubbling carbohydrates occupied every horizontal surface of my kitchen. My refrigerator had surrendered. The shelves groaned. The smell of condensed cream soup had permeated my drywall. I pulled myself onto a chair. This was not culinary assistance. This was a coordinated logistical air-drop designed to prevent a wounded soldier from leaving his bunker before the ceasefire. They did not want me to hunt. They did not want me to gather. They wanted to immobilize me beneath a sediment of dairy fat. I peeled back the silver armor of Brenda's dish. I took one forkful of the hot noodles. The salt, the cream, and the crunch of the potato chips detonated across my tongue with the force of divine mercy. I wept into the tuna. In my land, if a warrior collapses, his companions offer three days of respectful distance so that he may contemplate his mortality in dignity. Here, the women of the province assemble eight thousand calories of molten cheese and drop it on your chest until you are physically incapable of dying. I ate for four days straight. My spine healed on Thursday. My cholesterol doubled. The republic has no rivals.
Great work by the @SpaceX team!
Teams complete three Falcon launches, four first stage landings at four landing zones in Florida and California, and docking Dragon to the @Space_Station for our 21st human spaceflight in under 13 hours
The rooftop was shaking under my feet. Below me, cold black seawater had swallowed four stories of the hospital. Above me, 50-knot winds and freezing rain tried to rip me off the roof. In my arms was a 90-year-old grandmother who weighed 70 pounds. She looked up at me and whispered one word in English: "Sorry." She was apologizing for being a burden. A doctor stood next to me holding a plastic trash bag of IV tubes. He hadn't slept in 36 hours. Behind him, 73 other souls were waiting on this rooftop with no way down, no helicopter from Japan able to reach us in this storm, and the tide still rising. Then a blinding searchlight tore through the rain. An American voice crackled through the sky: "This is US Navy Rescue. Hold on. We're bringing everyone home tonight." NOBODY tells Americans what Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 pulled off that night in Minamisanriku. March 2011. Shizugawa Hospital. 72 hours after the tsunami. A 15-meter wave had destroyed everything below the fourth floor. 74 patients, doctors, and nurses were stranded on the flooded rooftop. A fierce storm grounded every Japanese rescue helicopter. Hypothermia was setting in. One more cold night and the elderly would start dying. Did HSC-25 wait for the storm to clear? NOT. A. CHANCE. Lt. Commander Pete Bauza and his crew flew their MH-60 Seahawk into zero-visibility squall lines. They hovered 20 feet above the rooftop for hours in winds that threw them sideways. A rescue swimmer dangled on a steel cable in the dark, catching one patient at a time. Elderly ladies in hospital gowns. Children. Doctors who refused to leave until the last patient was lifted. By dawn, every single one of the 74 was alive, warm, and safe at Yokota Air Base. Zero casualties. Lt. Commander Bauza would later say: "The grandmother who kept apologizing to us for being heavy — that's who we fly for." That is the United States Navy. That is the thin line that stretches 6,000 miles across the Pacific.
He didn't even have time to put on shoes. No body armor. No tactical gear. 55-year-old local plumber Stephen Willeford was sprinting full speed down the scorching asphalt road barefoot, gripping an unloaded sporting rifle and slamming in a magazine on the run. Rapid gunfire hammered through the church walls like artillery. His daughter screamed, trembling: "Dad, someone's shooting up the chapel!" Pure terror seized his throat. The shooter was covered head-to-toe in tactical gear and body armor. Any sane man locks the deadbolt. But Stephen didn't even pause to lace his boots. Not when his neighbors were inside. NOBODY tells Americans what happened in Sutherland Springs that Sunday. November 2017. A tiny Texas town of 600 people. A heavily armed gunman wearing black tactical armor and a ballistic helmet had opened fire inside the First Baptist Church. Over 450 rounds were tearing through pews and innocent families. Stephen Willeford, an ordinary plumber and grandfather, heard the shots from across the street. Did he hide in his bedroom until the police arrived? NOT. A. CHANCE. He grabbed his rifle from his safe. Barefoot, he sprinted across the pavement. He took cover behind a parked truck just as the shooter emerged from the church doors. The killer aimed an assault rifle directly at him. Stephen took a breath. He noticed the gunman’s tactical vest left his side exposed. Two shots. Clean. Right through the gaps in the body armor. The wounded shooter dropped his weapon, scrambled into his SUV, and sped away. Stephen didn’t stop. He flagged down a stranger’s pickup truck: "That guy just shot up the church! Follow him!" They chased the killer at 95 mph until the gunman crashed off the highway and took his own life. Bare feet on burning asphalt. An everyday tradesman who charged toward gunfire to save his community. That is the American spirit they can never take away.

They told 242 Americans to jump into a freezing lake and die. September 5, 2020. The Creek Fire in California exploded into a 50,000-foot furnace of black smoke. Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Two hundred and forty-two campers were trapped on the water's edge by a roaring wall of flame. Civilian helicopters turned back. Fire commanders called it an unsurvivable death trap. Officials literally radioed the families: SUBMERGE IN THE WATER AND PRAY. You know what Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Rosamond and his National Guard crew did? They didn't wait for the fire to clear. They didn't wait for safety protocols. They looked at that wall of flame and said three words: “WE’RE GOING IN.” Night-vision goggles were blinded by orange fire. Cockpit alarms screamed as external heat soared past 140 degrees. Turbulence was slamming the 30-ton CH-47 Chinook into violent free-falls. Did your pilots turn back? DID THEY ABANDON THOSE FAMILIES? NOT. A. CHANCE. Rosamond slammed the rear wheels onto a cracked, burning boat ramp while propane tanks detonated in the trees. They packed 65 severely burned civilians into a cabin built for 33. Flew through the firestorm to Fresno, dumped fuel, AND FLEW STRAIGHT BACK IN A SECOND TIME. By sunrise, all 242 souls were pulled out of the ashes alive. Zero dead. The rest of the world talks about protocols. AMERICANS FLY INTO THE FURNACE TO BRING THEIR PEOPLE HOME. 🇺🇸🚁🔥
