Vanishing Point (1971), directed by Richard C. Sarafian and starring Barry Newman, is the greatest car chase film ever made. It follows Kowalski, a former racing driver who attempts to deliver a white 1970 Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in just 15 hours. What begins as a reckless race against time escalates into a massive interstate police pursuit. As the chase unfolds, a blind radio DJ named Super Soul begins broadcasting Kowalski’s exploits, transforming him into a countercultural folk hero. The film belongs to a subgenre of exploitation cinema known as carsploitation, which flourished during the 1970s. Often low-budget independent productions, these films were built around high-speed pursuits and spectacular crashes, featuring incredibly dangerous stunt driving, much of which would never be permitted under today’s safety standards. These were films brimming with attitude, with the automobile central to their appeal, representing freedom and rebellion against authority. Vanishing Point is the pinnacle of the genre. It was shot by legendary cinematographer John A. Alonzo, who also photographed crime classics like Chinatown and Scarface. There are shots in this film taken from the side of the road, where cars come skidding past the camera at such terrifying speeds and in such close proximity that you wonder how nobody was killed. Vanishing Point is so revered by Quentin Tarantino that he paid homage to it in Death Proof (2007), making the same model of car the centrepiece of the film’s spectacular final chase sequence. Stuntwoman Zoë Bell, playing herself, explains that it’s the same white Dodge Challenger driven by Kowalski in Vanishing Point, describing the original film as “just one of the best American movies ever made.” (Because it absolutely is.)

Damon Wayans is 65, he's been famous since 1990, and when his big brother Keenen says "go get me a soda," he still gets up and gets it. If there's no seat left when Damon walks in, Marlon gives up his. Once you hear what Keenen did for that family, you'd go get him the soda too. Their dad managed a supermarket. He and their mom raised ten kids, five boys and five girls, in a housing project in Chelsea. Keenen was the second oldest, Damon was fourth, and Marlon was the baby, 14 years behind Keenen. Keenen got on stage at the Improv for the first time in 1975 and dropped out of college to do stand-up. When Damon went to visit him in 1982, the guy had a two-bedroom apartment with basically nothing in it but a waterbed. Damon said lying on it made him nauseous. Back home, the whole family would crowd around a black-and-white TV in the kitchen to watch Keenen on Johnny Carson. The antenna was busted, so they'd jammed a coat hanger in it. Marlon was a little kid sitting there watching his brother actually pull it off. In 1990 Keenen got In Living Color on Fox, and he put Damon, Kim, Shawn, and Marlon on the show. That's the same show that gave Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx their shot. Ten years after that he directed Scary Movie, which Shawn and Marlon wrote and starred in. They made it for $19 million and it did $278 million worldwide. At that point no Black director had ever had a hit that big. Then the Weinsteins pushed the brothers out of the franchise they created. Twenty-plus years later they came back, and this June the new one opened to $105 million worldwide, the biggest opening the series has ever had. Keenen co-wrote it. Damon's son is in it. Marlon put it pretty simply at the NAACP Image Awards last year. "We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for our big brother." Damon says nobody in the family ever had to be taught any of this. The kids just watched how everybody treated each other, and now the youngest ones get up out of their seats when he walks in. Keenen put four of his siblings on national TV, and all he wants back is somebody to grab him a soda. Damon's getting off cheap.

Lula won quite comfortably in the end! For almost 2 years, the American President and the richest man in the world have gone full tilt to attack Lula and boost his right wing opponent. And yet Lula got a bigger percentage of voters than Trump ever got.

The sequel to The Social Network has made less money in its entire run, worldwide, than the original made in its first three days. Sony's now yanking it from almost 2,000 theaters. And the reason goes back to a stopwatch. When Aaron Sorkin wrote The Social Network, his script came in at 162 pages. Hollywood figures about a minute of screen time per page, so Sony was looking at a movie close to three hours long about college kids building a website. The studio was nervous about the length before a single scene got shot. So David Fincher came over to Sorkin's house with a stopwatch. He had Sorkin read the entire script out loud, as fast as Sorkin heard the lines in his own head, and timed every scene. The whole thing came in at one hour and fifty-nine minutes. Then he made the actors talk that fast on camera. Remember the opening scene where Jesse Eisenberg gets dumped in a bar? That took 99 takes over two days. It's why everybody in that movie talks like they've had four espressos, and it's a big reason two hours of guys arguing in deposition rooms plays like a thriller. The Oscars tell you who made that work. The movie won three. Sorkin got one for the script, and the other two went to the people who controlled how fast it felt, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the score and Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for the editing. None of them worked on the sequel. Fincher wasn't involved and Eisenberg turned down Sony's money. Sorkin ended up directing it himself, and the cinematographer, Jeff Cronenweth, was the only other big name from 2010 who came back. You can feel it in the reviews. Even critics who liked The Social Reckoning said it's buried in Sorkin monologues. It opened to $5.5 million on a reported $30 million budget and dropped 69% the next weekend. Sorkin is still about as good as anyone alive at writing dialogue. On the first movie, Fincher's whole job was deciding how much of it you'd actually have to sit through, and how fast. This time around, nobody was holding the stopwatch.

The guy who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline went 13 years without releasing a movie. When he finally made one, his crew had to rescue every puppet from the studio and hide them in a barn because wildfires got too close. His name is Henry Selick, and you probably haven't heard it. Tim Burton came up with the story for Nightmare and produced it, and his name went above the title, which is why Selick's name never really stuck even though he's the one who directed it. Then he made Coraline, which kicked off the whole LAIKA studio. After a run like that, you'd figure he could get any movie he wanted made. And for a minute, he could. Pixar signed him to make The Shadow King, about an orphan boy whose hand shadows come to life. He worked on it for two years while notes from the top piled up and the budget crept higher, and then Disney pulled the plug in the middle of production. He did get the rights back eventually, with the catch that he owes Disney money if he ever gets it made. So he went back to an older idea his kids had sparked, two demon brothers causing trouble, and pitched it to Jordan Peele in 2015, back when Key & Peele was still on Comedy Central. Peele loved it and then got busy, because he'd just finished a small horror movie of his own. Selick told him to forget their project for a while and go promote that one. It was Get Out. When Peele came back, the first big thing he pushed for was the lead. He wanted the movie to follow Kat, a 13-year-old Afropunk orphan with green Afro puffs, and let the demons in the title play second fiddle. Then everything went wrong at once. They were about to start shooting when the pandemic hit. In 2020, wildfires came close enough to the studio outside Portland that the crew pulled every puppet out and stashed them on their puppet department head's family farm. The next summer, the Pacific Northwest heat dome shut them down again. Selick says the insulation on wires outside was melting and a couple of snakes got into the building. All of this for an art form where a 10-second shot can take two weeks. Every pat of that green hair and every swipe of lipstick in this clip got posed by hand and photographed, then nudged a tiny bit for the next frame. The shoot took four years, longer than anything he'd made before. My favorite detail is her face. Kat's head is 3D-printed in a top half and a bottom half, like most stop-motion puppets now, and studios usually erase the line where they meet in post. Selick told his team to leave it in. He wanted you to be able to tell somebody's hands made this. And Coraline still hasn't let go of people. It went back into theaters for its 15th anniversary in 2024 and made $52 million worldwide, the biggest US re-release in a decade, which pushed it past Nightmare and Chicken Run as the highest-grossing stop-motion movie ever in the US. Fifteen years later, people were still packing theaters for the movie that was supposed to set Selick up for life.
