… our rhinos as well as the dark undercover aspects of criminal wildlife trafficking. As I always say, every rhino poached, is a rhino stolen from each of us.
… so we should do everything in our power to make sure they stay part of future generations' heritage. If you'd like to do something today involving rhinos, I always recommend watching our documentary @STROOP_film which gives a glim into the heroic world of those protecting…
Today the 22nd Sept is World Rhino Day and while it is celebrated all over the world, our country is home to most of the world's rhinos. For me this is quite a sobering thought. These iconic animals are part of our South African heritage (which we will be celebrating in 2 days)..

Ek is op die oomblik in die veld besig met verfilming, maar ek praat gou met RSG oor die groot nuus van John Hume en vyf ander verdagtes se arrestasie wat betref die onwettige handeldryf in renosterhoring. Skakel in vir hierdie gesprek tussen 12:00 en 13:00 op 100-104FM. #sabc
… How amazing nature is, and how amazing the passion that people have to go and find nature’s gems.
… So it’s no surprise to read on the SANBI website that this species only occurs: “in remote, sheltered valleys of the central mountains of the Richtersveld”. Surreal to read that and know that it is indeed flowering in a remote valley… right now in fact!…
… as I’m probably only one in a hundred to have ever seen this plant flowering in the wild. Very humbled by this. And almost hanging off the edge of this cliff to get to this rare flower, I feel very blessed…
Dispatch From The Field: And what a gem Pieter found… the Gladiolus deserticola! A beautiful, showy flower with its bright purple! Pieter tells me that botanists the world over would give anything to be crouching over this plant, and that I should count myself lucky…

Dispatch From The Field: Very brave of Pieter to walk in shorts, because the last two times he was here, he incurred the wrath of a spitting cobra! Amazingly he got away unharmed. I must admit I’m a little anxious climbing the slope at eye-level…

Dispatch From The Field: Stop and smell the roses, well in this case Blue Mountain Sage or Bloublom-bergsalie. Pieter’s grandmother has given him some very good advice… “working in a beautiful place like this must mean taking time to enjoy the beauty of it as well”…
… Here we see orange, peach, yellow and also one flower can have different colours. I take a moment to engrave this picture in my memory… as I would like to revisit it again and again.
… genetic variation in the Richtersveld, as well as adaptations to grab the different insects for pollination. How clever! In Namaqualand, the species is monotypic with orange as the dominant colour…

… He allows me to touch the golden bark and as I do so I think of what this tree has seen. The San Bushmen hunting in the valley below, to now, us two staring at it with open mouths. There are four main landscapes out here and I aim to visit them all! So expect lots of photos 😉
… Pieter tells me that this giant quiver tree or reuse-kokerboom (Aloidendron pillansii) dates back a couple hundred years! They can grow up to 14-metres in height and it takes about 900-years to get there…
