TIG Explained Simply: The Innovation Game That Turns Algorithms Into a Global Competition
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if the world’s smartest people, fastest computers and toughest scientific problems all competed inside one giant sandbox - that’s basically @tigfoundation
TIG (The Innovation Game) is a new protocol built to accelerate algorithmic innovation by turning it into an open, global, crypto-powered game. Instead of one company or one research lab owning all the breakthroughs, TIG lets anyone contribute, improve and test algorithms and get rewarded for it.
Think of it as Proof-of-Work, but for real science.
So… what exactly is TIG?
TIG is a decentralised platform where people around the world work together (and compete) to improve algorithms that solve real problems from AI and cryptography to climate science and biomedical research.
In Bitcoin, miners use their hardware to solve pointless math puzzles just to secure the network.
In TIG, that same energy goes toward useful algorithms.
And here’s the twist:
Even the Proof-of-Work algorithm itself can be improved🔥
That’s the magic of TIG’s core idea: Optimisable Proof of Work (OPoW).
OPoW: Proof-of-Work That Evolves Over Time
OPoW doesn’t behave like normal mining.
Instead, there are two types of people involved:
1. Innovators
They create and improve algorithms.
Think: researchers, students, code nerds, AI geeks, hobbyists.
2. Benchmarkers
These are like miners.
They run the algorithms and find out which ones perform best.
Benchmarkers don’t choose algorithms based on preference, they choose whichever one gives them the best rewards.
That means the best algorithm naturally wins.
This creates a synthetic market for algorithms where efficiency = value.
The moment someone uploads a faster or smarter algorithm, Benchmarkers will switch to it. Innovators get rewarded because their code is being used. Benchmarkers get rewarded for securing the system and finding optimal algorithms.
It’s a self-improving loop.
Why OPoW Avoids Centralisation
TIG introduces multiple real-world “challenges” (problems to solve).
No single entity can dominate all of them.
To keep things fair, TIG:
• Spreads rewards across all challenges
• Penalises miners who only focus on one challenge
• Maintains decentralisation by pushing miners to work broadly
• Aligns token rewards with overall system health
A system that stays fair, secure and continuously improving.
Who Are the Main Players?
TIG is basically a three-team ecosystem:
1. Innovators - The Builders & Problem-Solvers
These are the people who create or improve algorithms. They can be:
• AI/ML researchers
• Open-source developers
• University labs
• Students
• Hobbyist coders
• People working in software, cryptography, physics, etc.
Whenever Benchmarkers use their algorithm, Innovators earn tokens.
So the better their code → the more adoption → the more rewards.
It’s a proper merit-based system.
2. Benchmarkers — The Miners of TIG
Benchmarkers secure the network by running algorithms submitted by Innovators. Their job is to:
• Test algorithms
• Pick the most efficient ones
• Compete to solve challenge instances
• Keep the network decentralised
Benchmarkers earn rewards for this work - just like miners in Bitcoin.
Their choices also act as a market signal, showing which algorithms truly perform best.
3. Challenge Owners — The Curators & Visionaries
These are the people (or teams) who design the challenges inside TIG.
They:
• Create the problems
• Maintain and update the challenges
• Keep them aligned with real scientific needs
• Bring researchers into the ecosystem
• Ensure innovation stays relevant
Challenge Owners earn token rewards too - partly fixed, partly performance-based.
The better their challenges attract innovation, the more they earn.
Why TIG Matters
The big idea behind TIG is simple:
👉 Instead of one corporation owning the future of algorithms, make it open, global and collaborative.
By decentralising innovation, TIG:
• Makes scientific progress faster
• Prevents monopolies on algorithms
• Turns computing power toward meaningful problems
• Creates a new crypto-economic system for discovery
• Makes breakthroughs accessible to everyone, not just tech giants
It’s like taking the power of decentralised networks and pointing it at the world’s hardest problems.
TL;DR:
TIG is where algorithms compete, evolve and get rewarded powered by a global network of innovators, miners and scientific problem creators.
$TIG
@VitalikButerin Then you absolutely need to have a look at $TIG @tigfoundation. Not only is it the most efficient means for optimizing algorithms, but every single algorithm that it produces is open source by default. If that sounds interesting to you at all, am happy to put you in touch.
