We are alarmed about a recent document published by Public Safety Canada which describes anti-Zionism wholly as a form of antisemitism. We reject this claim as a dangerous attack on legitimate political speech, and urge the Canadian government to immediately retract it. This latest conflation does not come out of nowhere. For years, we have warned that the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism, adopted by the federal government in 2019, effectively targets speech that is critical of Israel and Zionism. Canada’s IHRA handbook, issued by Canadian Heritage in 2024, identified speech about Zionism as alleged examples of antisemitism. The new document from Public Safety is the most explicit conflation of these concepts yet from the federal government. By regarding anti-Zionism entirely as a form of antisemitism, Canada is creeping towards the censorship of speech and activism in support of Palestinian human rights. This is the intended result of the relentless pressure from pro-Israel lobby groups, which have been lobbying for anti-Zionism to be treated as synonymous with antisemitism in order to shut down debate about Israel’s escalating crimes against the Palestinian people. To be clear, Zionism is the political ideology behind the creation of the state of Israel. Like all nationalist ideologies rooted in colonialism, it is not simply benign. Zionism is experienced by Palestinians as dispossession and oppression, due both to the historic planned mass ethnic cleansing of historic Palestine by Zionist forces and the continued violence throughout the occupied territories. Zionism continues to be the ideology that justifies Israel’s system of apartheid that oppresses and dominates the Palestinian people as a whole, as recognized by a virtual consensus of major human rights organizations We affirm that anti-Zionism is a legitimate form of political, philosophical, and academic expression against concrete injustices, both historical and contemporary. By defining opposition to Zionism as inherently antisemitic, Public Safety Canada is itself engaged in systemic racism against Palestinians and attempting to silence legitimate debate about apartheid and genocide. This perpetuates a climate of political persecution and erodes the ability of Canadians to engage with urgent matters of human rights. This is the very opposite of public safety. We echo the demands of @IndJewishVoices, the United Jewish People’s Order, and @FacultyJewish, who want the federal government to: 1) clarify that anti-Zionism is not a form of antisemitism; 2) acknowledge the harm that conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism does to Palestinian and Jewish communities; and 3) affirm the legitimacy of anti-Zionism as part of political debate and criticism concerning Palestine and Israel.

People keep asking why Trump suddenly got so hostile toward Canada this year. It’s not just the usual trade talk. Look at the Gordie Howe Bridge. Canada spent billions building a brand new public bridge between Detroit and Windsor. It was basically ready to open. The problem? It sits right next to the Ambassador Bridge, which is privately owned by the Moroun family and has been a monopoly cash machine for decades. Matthew Moroun (the guy who runs it) writes a $1 million check to a Trump super PAC in January. A few weeks later he gets a meeting with Commerce Secretary Lutnick. Hours after that meeting, Trump posts that he’s blocking the new bridge from opening until Canada “compensates” the U.S. and gives us half ownership. That’s the moment the temperature with Canada went from tense to open trade war talk. The Morouns spent 15 years and tens of millions trying to kill this bridge. They finally got the White House to do the heavy lifting for them. Suddenly “Canada is taking advantage of us” became the daily message.

The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.  Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life. This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.  Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

We have learned that Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Arieh King, an extremist Israeli settler and anti-Palestinian racist, has been invited to speak in Toronto on August 25. King is directly responsible through his Israel Land Fund for illegal efforts to dispossess Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem, and replace them with settlers, which is a war crime. He is an open racist, wanting “maximum Jews to own maximum land” and who calls Palestinians “natural swindlers.” He was investigated by police and condemned by the European Union for inciting violence and terror against the UN aid agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA). In 2022, he attended a commemoration for Meir Kahane, an extremist Israeli politician who supported racial segregation and deporting Arabs, and who founded the Kach Party which is a designated terrorist entity in Canada. The event is being hosted by Meir Weinstein, a self-described “loyal disciple” of Kahane who co-founded the Canadian chapter of the Jewish Defence League (JDL), a racist organization that has been described by the FBI as a "right-wing terrorist group" with a history of violence against Arabs, Palestinians, and others. Canada has already imposed sanctions against over 30 Israeli settler extremist individuals and entities for similar reasons, banning them from travelling to Canada. King must be next. They are discussing using nuclear weapons on Iran in strategy meetings. Yes you read that correctly. It’s real. I’m not speculating, I know. And it’s pure evil. The last time a nuclear weapon was used was August 6th and 9th of 1945 on two cities in Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, immediately killing 110,000 people, vaporizing people at ground zero, and total deaths reached 214,000 by the end of the year from severe burns and trauma. But the extreme suffering continued for the Japanese people from radiation sickness, skyrocketing cancer rates, and generational birth defects. Not to mention wiping out all means of their economy. And the suffering was so great that all of humanity vowed, “never again.” Trump and his admin were told by our own intelligence that Iran was no where near creating a nuclear weapon, then Israel said the same line it’s repeated for decades, “Iran is only weeks away.” So we bombed anyways, killed their leaders and innocent little children in a school, and Iran has controlled the Strait of Hormuz ever since and punished the region for their part in it. And now our government is the one actually discussing lowering the nuclear threshold in order to use nuclear weapons against Iran even though Trump claims he’s won the war like 40 times and says the U.S. controls the SoH. Trump promised no more foreign wars, but may actually be the one who delivers a nuclear holocaust that would likely drag the entire world into major conflict, economic depression, and mass human suffering we’ve never seen in our lifetimes and maybe throughout history. People need to speak out and boldly stop this insanity. America is not untouchable. If and when that happens, everyone, and I do mean everyone, will hold ALL of those in leadership right now fully responsible for the rest of human history. Do not use nuclear weapons and stop this war NOW.
