I should have included “not all expats are the same too”

If I ever use the word “expat” in a post about Cambodia some numpty always pipes up: “You mean immigrant.” Whatever, mate. Not all immigrants are the same. • I needed a criminal background check to be here • I work. Lose the job, lose the visa, leave. I am not allowed to stay • I can’t vote locally or nationally • I pay a lot of tax • I qualify for zero benefits • When I leave, I don’t get that tax back • I contribute to the economy and community. I join Cambodian festivals, respect the culture, and buy local when I can • I’m learning the language. Slowly • I’m proud of Cambodia even though I’m not from here. I defend it on this app Immigrant/expat. It matters not. I play by the rules and then I leave.

The #GRC is pleased to announce the publication of the latest edited volume stemming from papers presented at the 15th Gulf Research Meeting (GRM), held in Cambridge, UK, from 22–24 July 2025. Titled “The Impact of Fintech on Islamic Finance and Capital Markets in #Qatar Using Network Analysis,” the volume brings together research presented during the workshop “GCC 2030 and Beyond: National Visions, Fintech, and the Future of Finance.” The workshop was co-directed by Dr. Konstantinos Tsanis and Dr. Ahmet Faruk Aysan, who also served as co-editors of the volume. The contributions examine some of the key forces reshaping modern finance, including open banking, digital literacy, financial inclusion, Shari’ah-compliant innovation, and smart contracts. Bringing together perspectives from economics, law, sustainability, and technology, the volume connects theoretical insights with real-world developments across the #GCC. It also explores how the region is navigating emerging challenges, including cybersecurity risks and cross-border regulatory complexities, while advancing its ambitions to become a global leader in digital and sustainable finance. The UAE Labour Market Coordination Council held its fifth meeting, chaired by His Excellency Dr Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation and Acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with the participation of Council members representing relevant federal and local government entities. The meeting reviewed key indicators from the Labour Market Observatory and discussed the latest developments and initiatives across the labour market, including the flexible measures introduced to support business continuity and address the needs of private-sector establishments and workforce, and the joint efforts to enhance workforce wellbeing and improve quality of life in the labour market.
