“Once you’ve tasted danger, you’re hooked. You need it.” My dad partly based the Nigel Davenport character on his experience in the Malayan jungle while doing National Service. He encountered several officers who confessed that they were addicted to the adrenalin rush of danger.

Sadly no place for The Last of the Cybernauts...? in my Top Ten. I liked the idea of completing the trilogy, with a deferential nod to the late Philip Levene's earlier stories. But that spray-can ending was slapstick silly, IMO.

Number 1. The Avengers on film had often looked to Hitchcock for inspiration & Spooner delivers the ultimate Hitchcock homage in this cleverly constructed story. Casting Vladek Sheybal as the villainous birdman is the icing on the cake. An episode to match any 60s colour episode.

Number 2. Target! With a former sanatorium dressed as an outdoor set, this story is like a video game set around a shooting range for agents, one which has become literally deadly. Dennis Spooner delivers a brilliantly simple adventure here.

Number 3. Sleeper. Clemens takes the concept behind my father's The Hour that Never Was and expands the deserted location idea to encompass half of London. More than fifty London locations were used, including the Post Office Tower. Hard to fault this atmospheric outing.

Number 5. The Eagle's Nest. Clemens reworks his The Town of No Return in this opening, budget busting story shot on location in the Scottish highlands and islands. Peter Cushing sparkles as a cryonics expert forced to revive Hitler in a remote monastery...only in Avengerland!

Number 8. K is For Kill. A two-parter filmed in France and, for me, the best overseas story. Great use of location shoots in Chantilly Forest and the Parisian cityscape. WW2 Russian sleeper agents come out of hibernation in a surreal Cold War tale.

Number 9. Angels of Death. A sinister health farm, 70s wah-wah disco music, a deadly maze and a glittering guest cast: Dinsdale Landen, Terence Alexander, Caroline Munro, Lindsay Duncan. A nice blend of humour and dramatic tension.

Number 10. House of Cards. One of several Cold War 'sleeper' stories. The producers were keen to cast guest actors who had sparkled in the 60s series, and Peter Jeffrey makes a memorable villain once again.

1963. Edgar Wallace Mysteries, 40+ stories created as 'second features' or 'B movies' in the UK, but as a TV anthology in the US. This particular story brought my father and John Thaw together for the first time, a working relationship which would flourish in the 60s, 70s & 80s.
