The question is, what are the SR-71 rudders made of composites or all metal? BOTH  As you probably know, the A-12 came first, and then the SR 71. To win the contract from the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in the early 1960s, the A-12 had to be as invisible as possible. One of the things that stuck out literally was the two rudders on the Blackbird.  To confuse our enemies' radar, they were made of composites and canted inward for less visibility. It would help to remember that the A-12s were designed to fly over Russia. The SR 71s were not designed to fly over Russia. Instead, they were designed to skirt the borders. So, having a slightly less stealthy airplane was sufficient. The rudders sat on the vertical stabilizers.  The rudder from the SR-71 #955. It is on display at the San Diego Museum. This is the one they tried to sell on eBay. Someone ripped it open, and you could see the honeycomb composites.  How did they get a real SR-71 rudder? There was a stack of old SR-71 rudders in the DRMO (Scrapyard) at Norton AFB to be sold off for scrap when the program closed down. A few made it to private hands. The majority of them were composite rudders that had a limited lifespan compared to the metal rudders used for most of the program. The one in San Diego likely came from this selection of scrap rudders. From what I have read, I understand that the A-12 and early SR 71s were made of composite materials to help with the Airplane's Stealth; later, the Air Force changed to all-metal titanium rudders. All metal increased the visibility of the airplane.   I asked SR 71 Expert Mike Relja about the rudders. This is his answer: “Had problems in the early 70s with the leading edges of the composite rudders delaminating switch to all metal during that time frame.” The picture is of John Schuff and me contemplating a rudder change at DET 1 Kadena in the early 70's.
