THANK YOU PA RIN EALA

Alex Eala’s Wimbledon run comes to an end. It wasn’t meant to be today, but her work ethic, talent, and poise are putting Filipino tennis on the map. She is the first Filipina in history to reach the 2nd week of a Grand Slam. This tennis dream she had as a little girl has become reality, and that dream is awakening millions in the Philippines. Leaving with her head held very high, and her dream even bigger than before. 🥹 Keep inspiring. 🇵🇭❤️

So much to be proud of 🫶👏🇵🇭 #Wimbledon

So proud of you, @AlexEala05! 😍

Still what a historic run at Wimbledon! The first ever and only Filipino singles player to reach the 4th round of a grand slam tournament. No matter what the noise says, you’ve made the country proud and shown the world that you belong on the global stage. Salamat, Alex Eala! Mabuhay ka! 🙌💙🇵🇭

Alex Eala speaking through tears after beating Iga Swiatek to become the first Filipino player in the Open Era to reach the 2nd week of a Slam at Wimbledon. “How does it feel to be standing here after just defeating the defending champion on Centre court?” Alex: “I don’t know how to describe it. I’m in the 2nd week of a slam. It’s amazing for me. Iga is a phenomenal player and a really nice person. I’m really grateful to be able to share Centre court with her at Wimbledon. I’m really emotional. Maybe for someone like Iga who’s won so many slams or someone like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small.. but for someone who grew up in the Philippines…” 🥹 *Alex begins to cry* “I went to train with my brother and grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks and shoes and my chubby cheeks. To her, this is everything.” 🇵🇭🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

As an OFW in 🇹🇼 there will always be an added layer of microaggression towards Southeast Asians, which I experienced heavily today; so when Alex said, “maybe…this achievement may seem small, but for someone who grew up in the Philippines…this is everything,” I CRIED 😭🥳🤣

Alex Eala says she associates a lot of her childhood memories with Manny Pacquiao, ‘When he would have fights, it would really be like holidays in the Philippines. We would gather and we would watch his fights. People would call off work’ “You’ve spoken a lot about Rafa Nadal’s influence on you. But I’m curious about the Filipino athletes you maybe looked up to?” Alex: “Of course the kind of national hero in sports in the Philippines is Manny Pacquiao. He is the kind of first global athletic figure from the Philippines who I can remember and associate a lot of my childhood memories with. When he would have fights, it would really be like holidays in the Philippines. We would gather and we would watch his fights. And it would be, like, people would call off work. It would really be event. He is someone super inspiring as an athlete.” Alex: “In recent years, Hidilyn Diaz, who won the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines is a huge inspiration. That moment was incredible. Of course Carlos Yulo in the most recent Olympics won two gold medals. Amazing. EJ Obiena is the pole vaulter. He’s a good friend of my family and he likes tennis. So yeah there are so many people. I feel like the Filipinos have such great work ethic. We are really hard workers. When it counts, we can show up.” 🇵🇭🥹

On making it to the second week of a slam, Alex says through tears: “Maybe for someone like Iga who has won so many slams or maybe for someone like Serena or Venus this achievement may seem small but for someone who grew up in the Philippines and went to train with her brother and grandfather everyday after school with ruffled socks, light-up shoes and chubby cheeks, to her this is everything.” 😭😭😭😭😭

A moment Alex Eala will never forget. #Wimbledon
