So it turns out that Google Chrome was making everything on my computer slow *even when it wasn’t running*, because it installs something called Keystone which is basically malware. I made a website because this shouldn’t happen: chromeisbad.com

Why does Vim use `hjkl` for navigation? The usual answer is "it keeps your hands on the home row", while the historical answer is "because Bill Joy developed vi on the ADM-3A, which didn't have arrow keys". But we can push the history further back: why did THE ADM use `hjkl`?

@DanielMorsing Definitely. My first summer job at Bell Labs (in the lab that created Unix) I solved the problem they threw at me using Excel instead. Years later, Jon Bentley memorialized my temerity and laziness in the second edition of Programming Pearls.

rich people hate taxes, so i propose we rebrand the wealth tax and instead call it "dues" or "membership fee" and then when someone pays over $1 billion in taxes we send them a shiny black card that says "government recognized billionaire". this will work.

An unfortunate UX trend I’ve seen is “fake focus” (or phocus, haha!) — patterns that ostensibly increase our focus but IMO actually make us more distracted. One example is the move to fullscreen apps, originally necessitated by mobile but increasingly adopted by desktop. (Thread)

Software interfaces undervalue peripheral vision! (a thread) My physical space is full of subtle cues. Books I read or bought most recently are lying out. Papers are lying in stacks on my desk, roughly arranged by their relationships.

So in 2019 I have watched an Apple promo video explaining to me how great it is to be able to see the time all the time on my watch like it’s some novel new concept AND a video where they declare the escape key is back. Can’t innovate anymore my ass!
