You can take it from those of us who’ve spent years working on terrorism: the surest way to spawn more radicalized zealots is to glorify violence, embrace a cult of death, and create a martyr for the cause. Or take it from AQ and ISIS, whose tactics offer the closest modern-day approximation of Hegseth’s proposal. Mayor, this is the wrong message for this day. October 7 was the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. Choosing this day to level an attack on Israel while erasing Jews from your statement is profoundly offensive to the Jewish New Yorkers you represent and puts them in harm’s way. Today marks three years since October 7, the deadliest attack against Jews since the Holocaust. As I stood recently in a quiet Paris courtyard looking at the plaque in this photo, I was struck by how close history truly feels. The names engraved there belong to Jewish children arrested by the Vichy regime, deported from France, and murdered at Auschwitz simply because they were Jewish. Standing before the memorial, the distance between their fate and our present felt far smaller than the decades that separate them. The survivors who carried the lessons of the Holocaust into our lifetimes are still living or still remembered. The words “never again” are not relics of a distant past, they are responsibilities handed directly to us by people whose voices we have heard and whose stories shaped the world we inherited. History does not repeat itself in exactly the same way. But hatred follows familiar paths: the dehumanization of people, the normalization of prejudice, the excuse that some victims somehow matter less than others. What begins as words often ends in violence. What begins with indifference can end in tragedy. As we remember those murdered on October 7, we should remember something else as well: hatred is never harmless, and it is never a relic of history. The distance between memory and warning is much shorter than we would like to believe. May we never forget. May we never become indifferent. And may we have the courage to confront hate before it becomes history once again.

I disagree. Whether he meant to say it, misspoke, or was speaking in his usual stream-of-consciousness style is beside the point. He is the President of the United States, and his words carry enormous weight both at home and abroad. When a president makes comments that can be interpreted as defending or justifying catastrophic outcomes, the consequences of that rhetoric matter.
