Liberals and leftist class reductionists are in a race to the bottom where patriarchal apologia is concerned--either social conservatism is a 'personal choice' that's fine as long as women are taught to consent to it or it's a "cultural issue" distracting from stuff that matters.

I for one think the reach to psychiatry to legitimize the wrongness of rape was always misguided. It transformed a moral claim into a clinical one. The hate and anger that rape victims feel is not pathological; it is appropriate.

@monicabyrne13 Sexual violence perpetrators become objects of anxious hand-wringing about their fates precisely because our culture doesn’t understand sexual violence as wrong—or at least, is very conflicted about its wrongness. Instead, exposure gets framed as something that happens *to* them.

The notion that forgiveness is a prerequisite to healing from sexual abuse is one of the more insidious backlash lies. To "forgive" prematurely—that is, absent accountability—often does not "heal" the rape victim so much as give those around her permission to look away.

The pressure on rape victims and feminists to forgive needs to be understood as a kind of moral violence: an insistence that the wrongness of rape is never as severe as the wrongness of societal discomfort.

Tell me again about how gender is not a meaningful lens for understanding power, about how women are not an oppressed class. Look me in the eye when you say it.

At the Supreme Court, lawyers debate how many organs a woman has to lose before she can be allowed an abortion to save her life. At the New York court of appeals, lawyers declare that if a man raped too many women some of them have to shut up about it, out of fairness to him.

One thing about me is that I notice every little gesture or comment anyone says that trivializes rape. I don’t always say something but I never forget it.
