AFTER LIFE (1998); dir: Hirokazu Kore-eda! When we think of Kore-eda now, it’s usually these deeply human, family-driven stories, often with children at the emotional centre. But I think it feels unexpected when you place After Life inside Hirokazu Kore-eda’s filmography. And honestly, from the moment I started watching, one thought just refused to leave my head: “If I had to choose one memory to take with me after I die… what would it be?” In a very low-key way, the film kinda holds up a mirror for us as an audience. It makes us question the quality of the life we’re living right now. By the time I was a little into it, I was not just watching these characters choose their memories, I was already trying to choose mine. It was majorly becuz how Kore-eda turns something so imaginative into something deeply personal. It carries the DNA of his early days as a documentary filmmaker, and you can feel that all through the film’s visual narrative. It’s stripped down, almost observational, like the camera is just… there, quietly witnessing people rather than dramatizing them with flashy cinematic scenes. See replies for film readings: 🧵

“We broke up April Fool’s, so I took it as a joke. I’m willing to humor her for a month. Every day I buy a can of pineapple with an expiration date of May 1st, because May loves pineapple, and May 1st is my birthday. I tell myself that if May hasn't come back by the time i've bought 30 cans, then our love will expire too.” — Chungking Express (1994), dir. Wong Kar-wai
