The debate either to remove fuel subsidy to curb smuggling and help government have more fund for other economic purposes has been on for over a decade but political considerations have been a major hinderance. Successive governments in Indonesia have attempted fuel subsidy reform 13 times since 1998, aiming to make the subsidy framework more fiscally sustainable. But reforms have often been reversed or scaled back in response to political and economic pressures,” says a report.
