SFL is investing $365M in 2 container ships and a giant ammonia carrier and has already secured $333M in minimum charter backlog. The 8,800-TEU ships have 8-year minimum charters; the 93,000 cbm dual-fuel VLAC has a 5-year minimum.

Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar have no subsea route that avoids the Strait of Hormuz. On October 19, an IRGC spokesman said seven major internet cables run beneath the strait and that new targets would be unveiled. In the two weeks before, two OFAC-sanctioned tankers linked to Iran drifted for days directly over regional cable corridors. okt.to/eCn9gX

Reports suggest RBI has recommended tightening India’s LRS rules. The reported proposal: $0 limit for capital-account remittances and a $50K limit for current-account transactions, with education & healthcare reportedly exempt. This is $250K today If implemented, this could significantly restrict how resident Indians move money abroad. But the bigger question remains: Why are we seeing pressure on capital outflows? FII selling is only one part of the story. Domestic money flows deserve a read too. #IndianEconomy

gcaptain.com/ustr-proposes-… China ship fee delay to Jan 9 gives $ZIM optionality. Truce extends - status quo with rates already elevated. Fees kick in - Chinese-built tonnage rotates off US trades, TP capacity tightens, and a ~65% spot carrier captures the upside. 🤑💰💵🫰

Lloyd's List: Boxship charter rates hit a four-year high despite the Suez return. Bridge rule: high bunker prices mean slow steaming. Slow steaming eats capacity. The fleet is running slower to save fuel, and that keeps the charter market tight.

HD Hyundai and US engineering firm Kiewit have signed an agreement in Houston to form a joint venture, HD Kiewit Shipbuilding, which will build a new greenfield shipyard in the United States. Construction is set to begin in 2027 at a site not yet announced, with operations targeted for 2029 and around 3,000 jobs expected at full capacity. The yard will use HD Hyundai’s “Future of Shipyard” model, featuring digital twins, automation and robotic welding. It will pursue US Navy auxiliary vessels and commercial contracts, and may also supply ship blocks and modules to other American yards. The deal expands a partnership announced in July and deepens HD Hyundai’s role in Washington’s push to revive domestic shipbuilding, backed by South Korea’s $150bn maritime investment pledge. It follows the group’s other US initiatives, including Great Lakes shipyard upgrades with Fraser Industries, an automated welding pilot with Huntington Ingalls, a containership project with Edison Chouest’s Tampa Ship, and robotic welding orders from Chouest yards. Unlike rival Hanwha, which acquired Philly Shipyard, HD Hyundai is combining new yard construction with upgrades to existing facilities.

#Copper inventories monitored by the three major futures exchanges have risen for a fourth consecutive week to 1.05 million tonnes, with a 19.6 kt drop in Shanghai to a 2-1/2 year low being offset by a 6.8 kt increase on COMEX and a 47.5 kt jump at LME, however with the bulk of that going into US based warehouses. As highlighted previously, the build remains heavily concentrated in the US, where combined COMEX and LME warehouse stocks have reached 893,000 tonnes, or 85% of the global exchange-monitored total. This remarkable concentration reflects months of tariff-driven stockpiling, leaving inventories outside the US relatively tight despite the overall increase. Against this backdrop, traders are likely to intensify their focus on Washington and its pending decision on whether to impose tariffs on refined copper imports, potentially starting in January 2027. A decision against tariffs could trigger an unwinding of the stockpiling trade, putting pressure on U.S. versus ROW spreads and potentially releasing US-held metal back into the global market. Such a development could weigh on prices, although the speed and scale of any physical outflows would depend on the relative price incentives and costs of moving the metal.

Asia needs $1 trillion a year to keep the lights on. McKinsey says the region will need up to $ 15tn of energy investment by 2040. Asia is set to account for about 70% of global energy demand growth. China alone used 162 exajoules last year, more than the next ten Asian economies combined. India is a distant second at 39. The war showed how exposed that system is. China imports 73% of its oil and India 86%, much of it shipped through Hormuz. The money won’t all go to clean power. McKinsey sees about $ 300bn a year for solar and wind, flat coal use for a decade, and governments backing pricier domestic oil and gas just to import less. Energy security now means owning your own supply.
