I was fortunate a few years ago to cross paths and get to know Eugene Arcand, who opened my eyes and my mind to the real meaning behind the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, which of course is today. Eugene and I worked together for months and I was humbled to help him in some small way to tell his story, 781, which appeared as a multi-part series on tsn.ca. Each year at this time, I provide the link(s) to the series, hopeful that someone out there will be able to understand and appreciate the horrors of the Residential School system in Canada. Eugene is a tireless advocate for his people. He’s also an amazing story teller. I hope you’ll take the time to give it a read. Come for a deeper understanding of a difficult and emotional issue; stay for Eugene’s great sense of humor and some wild hockey stories. As Eugene says, haihai….

This Friday is marked as the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in our country. It’s also known as Orange Shirt Day, a tragic reminder that #EveryChildMatters. But do we as Canadians truly understand the horrific legacy of trauma inflicted by the Residential School system?

Everyone complains about America being such a terrible place. But if you want it to stop being so terrible, stop being terrible people.
