A month ago, @jasmalaysia approved a huge #oilpalm project by YP Olio Sdn Bhd. The site was part of a reserve. Most of it is forested. Orang Asli live there; they have set up blockades. It is also home to endangered 🐅 🐘 🐆 and hornbills. Is the project any good? A 🧵 (28)

The plaintiffs are claiming – among others – that YP Olio had breached their customary land rights, and that the governments had failed in their duty to protect the community’s aboriginal rights. x.com/macarangatweet…

The conflict began in 2019 when the Pahang govt leased 8.5K ha in Bukit Ibam reserve (incl Kg Berengoi & Kg Mesau) to YP Olio Sdn Bhd for oil palm. By 2021 YP Olio had cleared 2.6K ha there. Then, in 2022, the federal govt approved the EIA report of YP Olio’s oil palm project. 4/

Kalau rajin sikit korek mesti tahu semua ladang Indonesia diurus oleh anak syarikat kepunyaan Indonesia sendiri: PT Susantri Permai (Genting), PT Menteng Jaya Sawit Perdana (KLK), dan Minamas Plantation (SD Guthrie). Cari maklumat senang je tapi senang lagi salahkan orang lain.

Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd has clarified that most fires linked to its Indonesian subsidiary, PT Menteng Jaya Sawit Perdana, originated outside its concession area and have since been extinguished. This comes after KLK was named among 20 corporate entities linked to forest and peatland fire sites in Indonesia, where fires have contributed to transboundary haze across neighbouring countries. 🧵1

RimbaWatch is calling on the DOE to retract its EIA approval for a 8,400ha palm oil project in Pahang. It says it involves the deforestation of intact natural forests nearly twice the size of Putrajaya, and is the largest single palm oil project approved in Peninsular Malaysia in recent years. The environmental group adds the project does not meet the requirements for MSPO certification, and therefore there is no economic case for this project. RimbaWatch also notes that the project would result in tremendous carbon stock loss, and involves potential human rights violations. The group asserts that the project would also exacerbate human-wildlife conflict, and biodiversity loss.

MSPO penyelamat eksport sawit negara! Macam mana pekebun ni nak buktikan semua ni?
