⚠️ “ENDF STRIPPING TIGRAY’S INDUSTRIES FOR ‘SAFE KEEPING’” ⚠️ Redae Halefom, a federally appointed caretaker administration official, has reportedly acknowledged that the ENDF is dismantling and transporting Tigray’s industrial assets and construction machinery out of the region, claiming they are being moved to a place of “safe keeping.” Safe keeping where? Under whose authority? And for whose benefit? If these assets genuinely belong to the people of Tigray, why are they being removed from the region when Tigray desperately needs them for reconstruction, economic recovery, and rebuilding livelihoods? Why has the destination not been clearly disclosed, and what independent safeguards ensure these assets will be returned? At the same time, reports of threats against people labelled “cadres,” including warnings of being treated as enemy combatants, raise grave concerns about political persecution and the safety of civilians. The combination of reported asset removals and threats against people over political affiliations demands urgent scrutiny. Tigray cannot rebuild its future if its productive resources are taken away while its people are left struggling to recover. The people of Tigray deserve transparency, not vague explanations; accountability, not intimidation; and protection, not further deprivation. We call on Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and the international diplomatic community to seek independent verification, investigate the reported transfers, and demand clear answers about the location, ownership, and intended return of these assets. Tigray’s resources are not disposable property. Disturbing reports from Central Tigray indicate that Arena Primary School (ቀዳማይ ብርኪ ቤት-ትምህርቲ ጣብያ ዓረና), located in Endabatsahma Woreda, approximately 10 kilometers from the main road, has been destroyed in a drone strike reportedly carried out by forces of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. The school was constructed just last year at a cost of 12.5 million Ethiopian Birr, reportedly funded entirely by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of efforts to restore education, rebuild devastated communities, and offer Tigray's children a chance to reclaim their future after years of destructive war. According to local accounts, there was no military activity, armed presence, or movement in or around the school at the time of the strike. This was not merely the destruction of a building. It was the destruction of an investment in peace, recovery, education, and the future of children who have already endured unimaginable suffering. If these reports are verified, the incident raises deeply troubling questions about the conduct of military operations, the protection of civilian infrastructure, and respect for international humanitarian law. It also sends an alarming message to the international community: even reconstruction projects supported by the United Nations may not be safe from the renewed violence engulfing Tigray. How can international institutions meaningfully support postwar recovery when schools built through their assistance are reduced to rubble? How can displaced families be encouraged to return home when even their children's classrooms are not safe? We urgently call upon the United Nations, UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, the African Union, and international human rights organizations to: - Independently investigate the reported strike and establish the circumstances and responsibility. - Publicly condemn any unlawful attack on educational facilities and other civilian infrastructure. - Demand effective protection for schools, children, and communities affected by renewed hostilities. - Ensure that those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law are held accountable. The people of Tigray cannot be expected to rebuild their lives while the very foundations of their recovery are repeatedly destroyed. A school is a symbol of hope, not a military target. A classroom should nurture dreams, not become a scene of devastation. The international community must not allow Tigray's children to become casualties of another cycle of violence and impunity.
