I was asked many times if pragmatic disorder could be explained in terms of ToM or EF. The answer is simply no. See our new meta-analysis on pragmatics in schizophrenia: stronger relationship with ToM than EF, although no overlap but rather a hierarchy ➡️ authors.elsevier.com/c/1iuhB,28iJis…
Conversations involve a nuanced + unique exchange of words and behaviors. Recent technological advances have made it easier for conversation researchers to manage this complexity, paving the way for a deeper understanding of how humans communicate. @emyeom psychologicalscience.org/news/2024-marc…
Delighted to see our new paper (with Madeleine Long and Paula Rubio-Fernández) is out in Developmental Psychology examining how audience design and communicative styles influence prosocial linguistic behavior in healthy aging @UoE_Psychology @SchoolofPPLS psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2024-…

It is an amazing time to work in the cognitive science of language. Here are a few remarkable recent results, many of which highlight ways in which the critiques of LLMs (especially from generative linguistics!) have totally fallen to pieces.

Native speakers have long been held as "the" benchmark for language proficiency. But are native speakers always "native-like"? We find that, even when processing a basic language feature, Spanish speakers' processing is highly variable 🔥Hot off the press! doi.org/10.1111/cogs.1…
I've updated the preprint version of my paper on how to ensure high data quality when running experiments online. Hope to see this in print soon #LabourOfLove psyarxiv.com/2fhcb
Link to the preprint: psyarxiv.com/e2xta. Language comprehension requires pragmatic reasoning, which encompasses diverse phenomena: from irony, to conversational implicatures, to contrastive and emotional prosody, to indirect requests, etc. 2/n
Thrilled to share this tour de force co-led by SammyFloyd+@OlessiaJour! 8yrs in the making! "A tripartite structure of pragmatic language abilities: comprehension of social conventions, intonation processing, and causal reasoning". W/@ZachMineroff; co-supervised w/@LanguageMIT 1/n
Joint attention often plays a pivotal role for language to take off in autistic children but some of them acquire language despite low joint attention levels, in other, perhaps autism-specific ways. New review paper with A. Saint-Denis & L. Mottron sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Together with research showing that ToM brain regions respond similarly in blind and sighted adults (e.g., Bedny et al., 2009), our study suggests that vision facilitates, but is not necessary for, ToM development. 12/n
The punchline of our study is that blind children show qualitatively similar, but quantitatively weaker, responses in ToM brain regions. Selective responses were found in smaller portions of ToM brain regions, relative to sighted children. 9/n
Behavioural research even suggests that language might be *necessary* for ToM development. d/Deaf individuals who don’t have access to rich, conversational language perform worse on ToM tasks even as adults (Pyers & Senghas, 2009). 5/n
d/Deaf children who experience delayed access to language show delayed behavioural and neural ToM development (e.g., nature.com/articles/s4146… - see Intro for citations of behavioural work!). 4/n

I have used 'speech acts', yes, just like I have used 'speech community' in the past (because these terms originated in spoken language sociolinguistics/pragmatics), but I'd be keen to read about more inclusive alternatives.
Signed languages (socio)linguistics friends, do you use the term "speech acts" (e.g., when writing about pragmatics), or do you prefer something different?
