Also: I think you should buy books the way you want to. Pre-orders are lovely, but ultimately don't feel you *have* to do B&N. Indie stores are amazing and need love. This pre-order sale is just that—a sale. Not an imperative, only an option 🖤

Even 10k over three books doesn’t have to be the case if you’re building community and getting involved and trading skills with other people. I had friends who helped me with editing I couldn’t afford, etc. Think being a part of something before instant blockbuster success.
Long term is key, even now. Think of each book as an investment that won’t make money on its own, and put your money into it accordingly. If you blow 10k on your debut, and it does nothing, that could be it. You’re out.
Self-publishing is a barrier to people with not much income. BUT never go in thinking you MUST spend thousands and thousands. Going in thinking that your cover must be some 5k oil painting on the level of the best of trad is just not where you need to be.
"The Cruel Prince is not as politically in-depth as Priory of the Orange Tree." I mean one's YA fantasy and not an Adult epic fantasy with 800+ pages, so I don't expect it to be.

there are so many of my peers writing authentic stories people claim to want, but they're being ignored not only by their publishers but the same readers rallying behind a bully 🥲 this shit sucks a lot
yeah this, not to mention I'm ngl, it hurts to see how much more this person got support from the online community than actual Latine authors. It's like we have to perform our identities in order to get that kind of love, we can't just exist as authors
A lot of (white) ppl making pen name testimonials have missed the point of the conversation around Freydis Moon & are decentering the conversation, instead of boosting the issue hand. Racial representation. Freydis Moon was using brown-face & misrepping a minority group. 1/X
at some point we're going to have to talk about freydis moon being sued for legal action at one point or another.
When I found out that my ex-agent was actually another Freydís Moon alias, I initially laughed and shrugged it off; I’d already dealt with the pain of finally finding representation only to have it ripped away with no warning. But the more I think about it, the more it hurts.

I’m not sure what their motives were. And my pain still pales in comparison to what too many peers (specifically POC and Latine peers) but it’s finally sinking in. I didn’t write for months after they dropped me. I didn’t deserve that. I spent MONTHS querying and years 2”writing.
This person read IRONSONG, a manuscript I’ve poured my heart and soul into, a book directly based on my experience with chronic illness, religion, and queer discovery. They pretended like they were going to put it on sub. They gave me hope of publishing, only to take it away.
