As the NYPD’s “strategic response group” leads the crackdown at Columbia I’m reminded how the SRG was originally pitched as an elite counterterror unit that would stop ISIS attacks. 9 yrs on they’re primarily used to spy on and arrest protestors and clear out homeless camps.

There’s no way anyone truly believes that teenagers in tents on college lawns w/ posters & chants requires men with guns to show up. The police are summoned to threaten, to repress, to create fear. This is the core of their role. It was never about community safety.

btw, these campus encampment sweeps mirror what happens at encampment sweeps of unhoused folks. Tents trashed, rights violated, violently displaced, & criminalized. As consciousness shifts re Gaza & state violence, folks ought to also be radicalized against sweeps.

Saw 20 cases court monitoring in the Bronx today. #NYPD cops arrested 7 of the people for "suspended license", all NYers of color. managed to speak to 3 of the defendants: they were all "pulled over", 2 for tinted windows, 1 at a checkpoint. One said: "They're profiling us."
