Cutaway image of the bombard tower of Turaida Castle in Livonia, 1560. A castle was already built here in 1214 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and was an important fortress for the state of the Teutonic Order. In 16th century the tower was upgraded to an artillery tower!

One of the popular medieval weapons that you never see depicted in popular culture and video games was the staff sling. These were used to fling stones during sieges, in naval battles, as well as to throw early primitive incendiary grenades. Very lethal weapon!
