Many Muslims have seen Ayatollah Khamenei as a model for Islam, portraying him as a saint. But the oppression and crimes under his regime tell a different story, especially now that he's been killed in US Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026, ending his 37 year rule as Supreme Leader. Here is a numbered list of key alleged crimes and human rights violations attributed to his time in power as President 1981 to 1989 and Supreme Leader 1989 to 2026: 1. June 17, 1979: Adoption of Revolutionary Courts Regulations As a member of the Revolutionary Council, participated in enacting rules that enabled unfair trials, arbitrary executions, and detentions of political opponents. 2. April 18, 1980: Suppression of Universities and Protesters Key role in the Cultural Revolution, closing universities, violently suppressing student protests, and expelling dissidents, violating rights to education, assembly, and expression. 3. 1981 to 1982: Mass Executions and Torture of Political Opponents As President from October 1981, oversaw or enabled thousands of executions and tortures of dissidents, classified as crimes against humanity including murder, extermination, and torture, UN estimates over 4,000 executions. 4. Summer 1988: Massacre of Political Prisoners As President, held responsible for the extrajudicial execution of thousands, estimates 4,000 to 30,000, of political prisoners under Khomeini's fatwa, via secret death committees, deemed a crime against humanity by human rights groups. 5. 1990s: Chain Murders of Intellectuals and Opponents Under his leadership as Supreme Leader, dozens of dissidents, writers, and opponents assassinated in Iran and abroad, for example 1992 Berlin killings of Kurdish leaders, German courts implicated top Iranian leadership. 6. 1996 to 2009: Trials and Imprisonment for Insulting Khamenei Numerous cases of jailing people for criticising him, often with blasphemy charges, for example Abbas Maroufi sentenced to lashes and prison in 1996, blogger Omid Reza Mir Sayafi died in custody in 2009. 7. 2009: Crackdown on Green Movement Protests Endorsed violent suppression of post election protests, resulting in deaths, torture, and mass arrests, framed as countering foreign backed sedition. 8. 2019 to 2020: Suppression of Fuel Price Protests Security forces killed hundreds during economic protests, with mass arrests and torture, he defended the response as necessary for order. 9. 2022 to 2023: Repression of Woman, Life, Freedom Protests Over 500 killed, 60,000 arrested after Mahsa Amini's death, UN classified as crimes against humanity including murder, persecution, torture, and rape in detention. 10. Ongoing High Execution Rates, for example surges in 2025 Record executions under his rule, including hundreds in short periods for political or minor offences, over 30,000 state sponsored executions reported during his tenure overall. These allegations come from reports by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, UN bodies, and survivor testimonies. The regime always denied them as propaganda or foreign plots. With his death amid escalating conflict, it's a moment to reflect on the human cost of his long era of control. Let's remember the victims who suffered under it.
