इस पर राय बँटी हुई है कि बढ़ती जनसंख्या बोझ है या ताकत। कोई जापान की बढ़ती बुजर्ग आबादी का उदाहरण देता है तो कोई चीन की घटती जनसंख्या और कामगारों की संख्या का। पर यह पक्का है कि भारत के पास अपनी मौजूदा जनसंख्या के लिए पर्याप्त संसाधन नहीं हैं वरना देश में इतनी गरीबी नहीं होती।
