Azerbaijan is the legal successor to a 1918 republic that did not legally include #Artsakh within its territory. Azerbaijan’s present control over Nagorno Karabakh is the product of illegal use of force and its forced displacement of its indigenous #Armenia|n population, plain and simple.

David Manukyan, the former deputy commander of the #Artsakh Defense Army, who is being illegally held in 🇦🇿captivity, turned 61 today. The general was captured in Sep. 2023. In Feb. 2026, as a result of a sham trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a trumped-up case.

#OTD 16 Oct 1886, Armin Wegner, a German soldier & author, a witness to the Armenian genocide, was born in Elberfeld, German Empire. The photographs he took documenting the plight of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, today comprises the core of witness images of the Genocide. Wegner's story and his pictures have featured in multiple later efforts to document the Armenian genocide. Wegner was part of a German detachment led by Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, which was stationed along the Baghdad Railway in Syria and Mesopotamia; here, Wegner witnessed the death marches of Armenians during the height of the Armenian genocide. Disobeying orders intended to smother news of the massacres (as the Ottoman Empire and Germany were allies), he gathered information on the massacres, collected documents, annotations, notes, and letters and took hundreds of photographs in the Armenian deportation camps in Deir ez-Zor, which later served to evidence the extent of the atrocities to which the Ottoman Armenians were subjected. At the Ottoman command's request, Wegner was eventually arrested by the Germans and recalled to Germany. While some of his photographs were confiscated and destroyed, he succeeded in smuggling out many negatives hidden in his belt. Wegner protested against the atrocities perpetrated by the Ottoman government against the Armenian people in an open letter, published in the Berliner Tageblatt, submitted to American President Woodrow Wilson at the peace conference of 1919.  The letter made a case for the creation of an independent Armenian state. Also in 1919, Wegner published "Der Weg ohne Heimkehr" (The Road of No Return), a collection of letters he had written during what he deemed the "martyrdom" (Martyrium) of the Anatolia (Western) Armenians. His efforts during the aftermath of World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire explicitly advocated a separate Armenian nation as a path to reconciliation, which raised difficult political questions. Likewise, Wegner tried to ascribe culpability to the Young Turk regime rather than the Turkish people as a whole. In 1921 Wegner testified at the trial of Soghomon Tehlirian, the Ottoman Armenian who had assasinated Talat Pasha (the former Minister of the Interior of the Ottoman Empire) in Berlin. Wegner's role was only to confirm the scope and horror of the Armenian experience during the events that later became known as the Armenian Genocide. The documents of the sensational trial were collected into a book, "Justicier du génocide armènien: le procès de Tehlirian", for which Wegner authored the preface. In 1922 Wegner published "Der Schrei von Ararat" (The Scream from Ararat), an appeal for the rights of surviving Armenians. In 1927–8, he and his wife traveled to the Soviet Union and also visited the Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia, where he met with several Armenians he had befriended in Berlin in 1918–1920. In 1967 Wegner was accorded the title of Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. A year later, he was invited to Armenia by the Catholicos of All Armenians and awarded the Order of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. A 2000 documentary film, Destination: Nowhere (The Witness) directed by Carlo Massa and produced by Dr. Michael Hagopian, depicted Wegner's personal account of the Armenian genocide through his own photographs. Prior to the release of the documentary he was honored posthumously at the Armenian Genocide Museum in Yerevan for championing the plight of Armenians throughout his life. #OTD 17 Oct 1911, Mikhail Druyan, a Soviet-Armenian, Russian animated film cinematographer and director, was born in Kharkiv. Throughout his career, he filmed over 300 animated movies, many of which became classics of Soviet animation. As one of the primary cinematographers for the legendary Soyuzmultfilm (Союэмультфильм) studio, Druyan worked on a vast number of iconic animated features and short films. His technical precision and artistic vision helped shape the gold standard of traditional Soviet multiplane and hand-drawn animation techniques. Druyan was a veteran of the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

From the near-total demolition of Karin Tak to the destruction of churches and the Armenian Genocide memorial in Stepanakert, satellite images document the loss of Armenian heritage across Artsakh. Monument Watch attributes large-scale demolitions of settlements and cultural sites to Azerbaijani authorities . Speaking on September 28, Artsakh Cultural Heritage Ombudsman Hovik Avanesov reported more than 1,000 cases of vandalism since 2020, including the destruction of more than 7 Armenian churches and around 10 villages. Approximately another 10 villages had been partially demolished, alongside extensive destruction of Stepanakert’s architectural heritage and residential neighborhoods. In Stepanakert, Caucasus Heritage Watch confirmed that Surb Astvatsatsin Church, consecrated in 2019, was demolished between March 3 and April 2, 2026. It also documented the destruction of Saint Jacob Church and the Armenian Genocide memorial. The memorial, destroyed between July 14, 2025, and April 25, 2026, included a white marble bell tower housing a reliquary containing human remains brought from Deir ez-Zor. Satellite images published in April 2024 showed the demolition of Surb Hovhannes Mkrtich, known as Kanach Zham, in Shushi, and the near-total destruction of Karin Tak, the historic Armenian village directly below the city. Azerbaijani forces seized the area during the 2020 Artsakh War. In the Hadrut region, Surb Sargis Church in Mokhrenes was demolished in 2022. Monument Watch also recorded damage, looting and demolition in Togh, Mariamadzor and Tsamdzor. In Taghut, approximately a quarter of the residential structures visible in 2019 satellite images had been demolished by June 2023. Azerbaijani lawmaker Elnare Akimova rejected reports of the Stepanakert church demolitions on April 22, 2026. RFE/RL published satellite imagery confirming both demolitions on April 27. Monument Watch describes Azerbaijan’s large-scale demolitions as systematic, targeted destruction of Armenian heritage, removing physical traces of Armenian history and culture from Artsakh.

It's been 3 years since Azerbaijan ethnically cleansed Artsakh of its Armenian Christian population. Now it is destroying their churches and trying to strip the surviving ones of their Armenian identity. The pattern began in Nakhchivan. Researcher Argam Ayvazyan documented 89 Armenian churches and 5,840 carved cross-stones there before their destruction. A later satellite investigation confirmed the destruction of 108 out of 110 Armenian churches, monasteries and cemeteries it identified. In Artsakh, churches including Kanach Zham in Shushi and the Holy Mother of God Church in Stepanakert have been demolished. Azerbaijani officials now claim surviving Armenian heritage sites are “Caucasian Albanian,” a revisionist claim widely rejected by historians and heritage experts. Destroy the churches that can be destroyed. Rename the ones still standing. That is how Ilham Aliyev’s government attempts to erase  Christianity while advertising Azerbaijan as a place of religious tolerance and boasting of its close partnership with Israel.
