@AngryBlackLady Broke: “They go low, we go high.”
Woke: “They go low, we respond proportionately and decisively.”
Bespoke: “I’m not locked in here with you... you’re locked in here with me.”
Most children love to read high-interest books. Where is the choice? Most children do not like being timed, tested, and then thrown into "interventions" that only do more of what did not work. We have too much good data on good reading instruction and that is not it.
When you hit your children, humiliate them, embarrass them, shame them as a way to correct unwanted behavior, all while telling them you love them, you normalize a relationship between love & abuse.
To demedicalise distress is not to delegitimise distress. One can honor, respect and care for profound suffering without labeling it as illness, pathology or disorder.
I was talking to a friend the other day about how white cisgender women in America have a choice to make: they can finally realize that their struggles are in solidarity with other marginalized groups or they can keep viewing themselves as uniquely oppressed and forgo solidarity.

Writing a talk on having ADHD as a researcher and the thing I can't get past is that all my coping mechanisms and all my struggles were always seen as wonderful because as long as I was "performing" no-one really bothered. It was a one-stop trip to burnout.
A poll for parents of neurodivergent children:
Have you been diagnosed with #autism or #adhd since your child's diagnosis? Or do you suspect you might be neurodivergent?
#Neurodivergent#autismAcceptanceMonth #SEND
was talking to my person the other day & we realized that people really believe things they can’t explain, like for real for real
& it just blew my mind
I’m constitutionally incapable of holding a belief I cannot explain
mind boggling
My Autistic-ADHD brain has two natural responses to authority: question everything or question nothing. It’s total anarchy or unwavering subservience. All or nothing. No in-between. I can often find a middle ground, but it takes conscious effort and sometimes I forget to make it.
Neurotypical often ask #ActuallyAutistic people « why are you so tired? » They never consider that just getting up in the morning, living in THIS world, is absolutely exhausting. The effort we put into being the best we can be, the masking, the basic functions of life. STOP.
The Autistic urge to fix the entire world.
The Autistic meltdown because you can’t.
The Autistic realization that Twitter should definitely not be your only coping mechanism because this is happening way too often.
“What’s your favourite book/movie/song/TV show?”
Most people: *think for a second and share something they think fondly of right now*
Autistic ADHD me: *is silent for ages, overwhelmed and trying to recall and choose between everything I’ve ever liked to find my true favourite*
@blkgirllostkeys Not surprised at all by this. Reading a research currently for a lecture and it tracks… ADHD/Autism taking people words at face value and being easily taken into situations due to curiosity yeah would be interesting to know how many of us make it into these situations.
i have criminally low blood pressure which means if i've been sitting or laying down for a while and i stand up too quickly i black out and sometimes faint
unfortunately i also have ADHD
I CAN‘T apply to a job when I don’t meet all criteria listed.
This literal, rigid, rule-following, unable to lie or one meltdown-level anxious/distressed thing is so common for autistics that it‘s used for autism diagnosis.
„Just do it anyways“ doesn‘t work for many autistics.
If you’re autistic and looking for a job, don’t be afraid to apply for roles you like but don’t meet all - or even most - of the requirements for. Job specs are not meant to be taken literally; NT people often apply for and secure jobs meeting only a fraction of the requirements.
Before discovering I was autistic everything I did to create a comfortable existence for myself was reactive, intuitive, and unintentional.
After discovering I was autistic, creating a comfortable existance for myself became PROACTIVE and INTENTIONAL. Major game changer.
im feeling so defeatist lately. like im taking my anti-depressants, im going on walks, im eating healthy(ish), im trying to put my phone away more. but i can't self-care my way out of this pandemic that no one cares about. i can't self-care my way out of isolation.
You will thank yourself later when your to-do list is not so never-ending.
2) Find systematic and efficient ways to do a little bit rather than giving into procrastination and putting it off for later. For ex., I do three similar tasks back to back to save time through day.
I wanted to share #AuDHD tips that have helped me with productivity and energy.
1) If you have something to do, and it will take less than five minutes, put other things on hold and do it now. I don’t care if you are in the middle of something else, just take a break and do it
hold your interest. Hot or cold baths/showers can help, depending on your sensory profile and preferences. Finally watching TV that you HAVE SEEN BEFORE is great for dopamine. Every time something happens that you expect, those systems come alive a little bit. #Autism
Some healthy ways are GENTLE learning e.g. watching peaceful but mildly interesting documentaries e.g. travel or animals. Travel videos really help me to kickstart my brain when I'm on a fug. Another way would be listening to stories - nothing too overwhelming but enough to...
#Anhedonia refers to a lack of pleasure. When I was in #burnout, I didn't want anything, I didn't know what I wanted and I couldn't even do things I actually loved. I ate and ate and ate to try and stimulate myself and kickstart my brain functioning.
I want to remind you all that not wanting to do anything or having to stimulate yourself with low energy stuff like eating or TV can be indicative of #AutisticBurnout for some, and that the old dopamine systems may need a bit of a reset.
It’s Holy Friday for many.
The commemoration of the execution of a Jewish man, and subsequent appropriation of his beliefs to create a state religion that has murdered millions.
If you celebrate Jesus’ death, perhaps consider the entire historical implications of his murder.
Having to go on living life without getting closure for the pandemic gives me a weird feeling of... emptiness, I guess?
I thought we would end this with a big positive cultural change, become more collective... and then suddenly... most people just gave up.
