Competitors will eventually have access to increasingly similar components. And when hardware starts becoming comparable, companies need another way to differentiate. Identity. Imagine purchasing a humanoid platform. Then choosing everything else separately. Face. Hair. Voice. Personality. Clothing. Expressions. Behavior. AI capabilities. The robot itself might cost $20,000–$30,000. But that could only be the beginning of the customer relationship. Premium appearance package. Custom voice. Advanced personality. Additional skills. Memory subscription. Cloud AI. Cosmetic replacement parts. Future body upgrades. One hardware sale could create years of recurring revenue. We've already seen versions of this business model everywhere. Cars sell trims and options. Games sell skins. Phones sell services and accessories. Software sells subscriptions. Humanoid robotics could combine all of them into one product. And unlike a smartphone, people may develop a much stronger attachment to a machine that talks to them, remembers them and physically exists beside them every day. That makes customization much more valuable. You aren't just changing how a device looks. You're changing who the machine feels like. The motors could eventually become commodities. The batteries could become commodities. Even powerful AI models could become widely available. But giving customers a robot they specifically want to live with? That could command a serious premium. The body creates utility. The AI creates intelligence. Identity could create the margin.
