Whenever I read a ruling that gives me a strong sense of a judge's political opinions, I lower my estimation of its correctness. And that's true even when I'd happily agree with the opinion in the pages of a newspaper.
Judges should not aspire to be pundits.
The best judicial writing, to me, is dry as toast. Readable, simple, and without personality.
Good judging is often invisible, in that it consists of applying settled law to disputed facts. When judging is very visible, it reduces the confidence of the parties that they are getting a fair shake.
