📖🧠 George Orwell avait compris qu'il n'était pas nécessaire d'interdire aux hommes de penser pour contrôler leur pensée. Il suffisait de contrôler les mots avec lesquels ils pensent... En 1949, George Orwell publie 1984. Un roman dans lequel il décrit une société où le pouvoir ne cherche pas seulement à contrôler ce que les gens font, mais aussi ce qu'ils pensent. Et pour y parvenir, il utilise une arme redoutable : le langage. Dans son roman, le régime invente la « novlangue ». Une langue volontairement appauvrie, conçue pour supprimer progressivement les mots permettant d'exprimer certaines idées. L'objectif est simple : rendre certaines pensées impossibles à formuler. Parce que les mots ne servent pas seulement à parler. Ils servent aussi à penser, à réfléchir. Et celui qui contrôle les mots influence la manière dont les autres perçoivent le monde. Regardez comment fonctionne aujourd'hui le débat public. Il suffit de remettre en question une idée dominante pour se retrouver immédiatement affublé d'une étiquette. Vous critiquez une politique ? On vous prête des intentions. Vous posez une question dérangeante ? On vous soupçonne de défendre une idéologie. Vous contestez un discours présenté comme une évidence ? On vous demande de vous justifier avant même d'avoir examiné vos arguments. Et le plus fascinant, c'est que cette méthode fonctionne terriblement bien ! Parce qu'une fois que vous avez collé une étiquette à quelqu'un, vous n'avez même plus besoin de répondre à ce qu'il dit. Vous avez déplacé le débat. On ne discute plus de ses arguments. On discute de sa personne. On n'attaque plus me fond des idées mais la surface pleine de futilités. Et pendant ce temps, le véritable sujet disparaît. C'est une mécanique redoutable, parce qu'elle pousse progressivement les individus à s'autocensurer. Les gens commencent à choisir leurs mots avec précaution. Ils évitent certains sujets. Ils préfèrent se taire plutôt que de risquer d'être publiquement associés à une opinion jugée inacceptable. Donc vous comprenez bien que lorsqu'une société en arrive à ce stade, elle n'a même plus besoin d'interdire les opinions. La peur du jugement suffit. Les individus deviennent leurs propres censeurs. Orwell avait également imaginé un monde où les institutions portaient des noms qui contredisaient leurs véritables fonctions. Le ministère de la Vérité falsifiait l'histoire. Le ministère de la Paix s'occupait de la guerre. Le ministère de l'Amour organisait la répression. Tout était inversé. Le langage ne servait plus à décrire la réalité, mais à la maquiller. Et nous sommes en plein dedans les amis.... Et c'est précisément pour cette raison qu'il faut impérativement apprendre à regarder au delà des mots. Ne jugez pas une politique à son nom. Regardez ses conséquences. Ne jugez pas une personne à l'étiquette qu'on lui colle. Écoutez ses arguments. Ne confondez pas une opinion largement partagée avec une vérité démontrée. Et surtout, ne laissez jamais quelqu'un décider à votre place de ce que vous avez le droit de questionner. Et au fond, la question qu'Orwell nous pousse à nous poser est assez simple. À quoi sert d'avoir la liberté de penser si vous finissez par ne plus oser penser autrement que les autres ? Le plus inquiétant n'est pas qu'on vous impose le silence.
