Two once very literal expressions: a ‘backlog’ was a large log at the back of the fire that kept smouldering away while smaller wood came and went. And the original ‘deadline’ was a boundary around a prison: any inmate attempting to cross it was liable to be shot.

18 months ago I set up the 1st prison Employment Advisory Board (EAB).Now all 92 release prisons in England and Wales have EAB’s,led by inspirational Chairs who help develop long term cultures of employment in the system,and get people jobs on release. Thanks for believing in me!

One of the best of many good stories about ‘Rambo’ was at the end of his tenure he decided that as Her Majesty’s CIP he should tell her what he found. Somehow he got himself an audience - and gave her a no holds barred account of the state of prisons. Oh to be a fly on the wall
