For those who don’t know (including himself) , he is talking about GDP… Even before verifying the authenticity of the figures being thrown around, we must understand that just because someone says the economy was 5.1 trillion under Kibaki and is now 17 trillion under Ruto, it does not automatically mean things have improved or that citizens are benefitting from that supposed growth in any meaningful way, because GDP is not money in your pocket, it’s just a big number that includes everything the country produces even things that don’t reach ordinary people’s lives. When someone says the economy is bigger today, what they forget to mention is that the cost of living is also higher, jobs are scarcer, food is more expensive, and taxes are crushing everyone from mama mboga to the boda rider, so saying “Ruto’s economy is bigger” without mentioning that life is harder is like telling someone their salary doubled while their rent, school fees, fuel, and unga prices tripled, leaving them worse off than before. Under Kibaki, people genuinely felt the difference because there were jobs being created, food was affordable, roads were being built, and there was a general feeling that life was moving forward for ordinary Kenyans, but under Ruto, even if the economy grew on paper, people are losing jobs, taxes are multiplying, and the only advice they get is “be patient” while government officials continue borrowing more money every month. What most people don’t realize is that GDP includes everything even what the corrupt have looted and wasted, because when a few powerful people steal billions, build luxury apartments, import cars, and throw massive parties and donate looted billions, all that spending still counts as “economic activity,” which means GDP goes up, even though the stolen money never reaches hospitals, schools, or the pockets of ordinary Kenyans struggling to survive. Even if only 10 well-connected individuals become billionaires today while the rest of the country sinks deeper into poverty, GDP will still go up, because it doesn’t care who is eating and who is starving, it just adds up the total spending. You could have 10 billionaires building hotels in Nairobi, importing luxury cars etc while 10 million Kenyans are begging for food, and the economy will still be declared “growing.” That’s the tragic joke of GDP as it celebrates the shine at the top and ignores the struggle at the bottom. It’s always the lowest minds who rush to quote GDP as proof of progress, because it’s the laziest statistic to misuse. Serious economists have questioned GDP for decades, warning that it hides inequality, ignores suffering, and rewards even corruption. For this reckless tweet alone, Mutahi Ngunyi deserves 10 years in Kamiti and 5 strokes of the cane. Economic misinformation with tribal spice should come with jail time and a free Economics textbook in every cell.
