Today marks the 6th anniversary of the beginning of the 44-Day War. 3,755 Armenian soldiers gave their lives in defense of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Artsakh was ethnically cleansed by Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Israel; supported by jihadist mercenaries. The United States, Russia, and the European Union watched with empty words as 150,000 Christian Armenians were uprooted and forced out of their 2,000-year-old homeland. Today, Artsakh lives in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem. We will never forget.

During Hikmet Hajiyev’s visit to Gandzasar with foreign diplomats, an Azerbaijani tour guide stopped by a gravestone and admitted that, “unfortunately, she could not read” the inscription. The reason is obvious: the inscription is written in #Armenian letters. The paradox is that visitors are being told about an alleged “Caucasian Albanian heritage,” while the stones themselves repeatedly expose the contradiction. Armenian inscriptions, khachkars, the names of #Armenian princes and epitaphs remain there. An excursion script can be prepared, a convenient narrative can be constructed and repeated to foreign diplomats. But the falsification cannot be carried through to the end: the #Armenian inscriptions, khachkars and gravestones remain in place, directly contradicting what visitors are being presented as “Caucasian Albanian heritage.”

Short answer: Yes. Azerbaijan systematically razed at least 89 medieval Armenian churches, 5,840 khachkars, and 22,000 tombstones in Nakhchivan (documented via satellite), plus dozens more sites damaged or demolished in Nagorno-Karabakh since 2020/2023. ISIS destroyed dozens of Christian churches and monasteries in Mosul and Iraq/Syria, but the scale of targeted Christian monument destruction by Azerbaijan is larger per available reports.

Azerbaijan brought diplomats from 58 countries to Nagorno-Karabakh to show them the consequences of what it calls “Armenian vandalism.” However, the delegation’s route also passed through places where #Armenian heritage has now been destroyed or significantly altered. In Stepanakert, the guests were shown the so-called “Victory Park,” created following large-scale demolitions in the area of Hovhannes Tumanyan Street, one of the city’s oldest Armenian neighborhoods. From there, the delegation proceeded toward Shushi, also passing along the road near the site where the Armenian Surb Astvatsatsin Church in Stepanakert was demolished by the #Azerbaijani side. In #Shushi, the diplomats were shown one of the largest mosques in the region, currently being built within the city’s historic Armenian environment, in close proximity to the Kanach Zham Church, also known as the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral of the Holy Savior. While the new mosque is presented as a symbol of the city’s reconstruction, Kanach Zham, or the Church of St. John the Baptist, has been almost entirely destroyed, while Ghazanchetsots has undergone significant alterations. At the same time, cases involving the destruction of #Armenian cemeteries, historic neighborhoods, and other elements of Armenian cultural heritage have also been documented. It is difficult to view all of this merely as a series of separate construction projects. The destruction of Armenian heritage and the creation of a new symbolic landscape in its place present a picture of the systematic erasure of the #Armenian historical presence from the area. In other words, the diplomats did not have to travel far to look for “vandalism”: their own route passed through the traces of the destruction and transformation of Armenian heritage.

Azerbaijani Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva dismissed human rights defender Siranush Sahakyan’s allegations of torture and religious discrimination against #Armenian prisoners as “groundless,” portraying them as a threat to the peace process. However, an official denial alone is not enough. If Baku is confident that the allegations are false, the Azerbaijani authorities should provide independent international monitors, lawyers and doctors with regular and unhindered access to the prisoners. They should also publish the findings of independent medical examinations—with the prisoners’ consent. Moreover, footage released by Azerbaijani media itself raises serious concerns about the condition of the #Armenian detainees. The visible deterioration in the appearance of former Nagorno-Karabakh President Bako Sahakyan and businessman and philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan is particularly alarming. In Sahakyan’s case, apparent dental problems were also clearly visible. These circumstances require an independent investigation, not propaganda statements. The ombudsperson’s references to inspections conducted by the institution she herself heads cannot replace independent international oversight. If Azerbaijan truly has nothing to hide, the solution is simple: allow independent experts to visit the prisoners and speak with them confidentially, without pressure or the presence of government representatives.
