I am deeply concerned by the detention of Japanese journalist Yuki Imai in Russia.
Journalists must be free to report without intimidation - Russia should respect media freedom and grant Japan appropriate consular access.
One American government source says that Donald Trump is panicked by terrible polling ahead of the midterms. And that Volodymyr Zelensky is a convenient scapegoat economist.com/europe/2026/10…
I was appalled by what ITV’s undercover investigation into Reform UK revealed.
Racism, misogyny and deeply disturbing comments from people holding elected office.
I’d encourage everyone to watch the documentary and judge for themselves. This behaviour has no place in British politics. 👇
RBC-Ukraine today shared a comment from a Ukrainian government official who said that the Americans want Ukraine's Defense Forces to withdraw from Donbas, effectively handing it over to Russia.
Back in 2025, Putin demanded that Trump make Ukraine surrender Donbas to Russia, threatening to take it by force otherwise.
Trump, apparently, was quite willing to believe Putin, since Russia had continued to advance in Ukraine, albeit slowly, even when American military assistance was still actively flowing.
Trump figured that if he cut off aid and restricted arms supplies (and sales), Putin would surely manage to finish conquering Donbas within a year or so.
More than a year has passed, and Putin has not only failed to take Donbas but has actually lost ground in certain areas.
His offensive has effectively stalled along several key axes, while Ukraine has even carried out an offensive operation called Vivaldi.
The operation not only allowed Ukraine to recapture territory and push Russian forces back, but it took place precisely where the Russians had been concentrating their efforts to complete the conquest of Donbas.
It's easy to imagine the scene: Trump wakes up and receives his daily intelligence briefings, as every leader does. He asks, "So, how are the Russians doing? Have they captured Donbas yet?" And his aides and generals reply, "Actually, it's the other way around. The Ukrainians have pushed the Russians back."
The US administration apparently believes (wrongly, but that's what it believes, yes) that Putin will agree to freeze the war if he gets Donbas.
And this isn't speculation pulled out of thin air. It's literally what Rubio himself was saying even before Trump's latest policy shift: the Russians want Donbas, the Ukrainians aren't prepared to surrender it without a fight, and so, supposedly, we have a strategic deadlock.
Trump decided to break this strategic deadlock by openly siding with Putin, who promised more than a year ago that he would finish taking Donbas but still can't get the job done.
This has turned out to be a remarkably stupid decision, because Putin's continued failure to conquer Donbas now leaves the US administration looking like fools and carrying the stigma of betrayal.
And that's not an exaggeration — even several members of the Republican Party have already described Trump's actions as a betrayal.
The Republican Party, for crying out loud.
As for Donbas, Kyiv understands perfectly well that Putin's ambitions don't end there. Let me remind you that Russia also officially claims the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions as its own.
And more broadly, Moscow is unwilling to accept an independent Ukraine. It wants a Ukraine subordinated to Russia, in whatever form, but subordinated nonetheless.
And yes, future historians will undoubtedly examine all the stupidity, shortsightedness, and pettiness of the current American administration in painstaking detail — because there's simply no other way to describe it.
I served two tours in Afghanistan alongside allied troops. We shared tents and flew missions in the same skies. Over 1,000 soldiers from partner nations died fighting with us there.
When our SecDef diminishes their sacrifice, he damages trust with allies we may need again.
Plus, he's the SecDef. He should be strengthening our alliances, not teaching ROTC cadets.

I was a captain in Afghanistan, and we would go to the headquarters in Kabul, and there would be 50 flags at the headquarters.
It was a beautiful thing to see 50 different countries contributing to the NATO alliance and the ISAF mission there.

🇮🇹 After France, protests in Italy have turned into riots and looting
In Milan, young people arranged a meeting on social media near a central square, then smashed shop windows and looted stores and supermarkets. More than 200 had been detained.
After unrest also hit Turin and Bologna, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a public-order meeting.
BREAKING: Ukraine has carried out the world’s first medical evacuation of a human via a drone from the battlefield the 30th mechanised brigade of Ukraine managed to save their injured comrade from a minefield.
Just absolutely insane.
This is so perfect. Honestly, I thought "Tommy" was a plant by the way he walked off at the end. Abdul El-Sayed just looks too good here.
But after looking it up, I learned he was a former Josh Hawley staffer.
This is the most inspiring performance by an American politician that I can remember seeing.
El-Sayed was faced with a bigoted question. He didn't hide from it or pander. He broke down why it was a bigoted question, and gave a stirring defense of American principles and the Constitution.
At the end, his interlocutor wouldn't condemn Christian Nationalism! El-Sayed has a perfect response to this, and "everybody clapped."
A lot of us have had this experience of arguing with right-wingers, questioning them, and then finding out that they have no principles, they're just bigots. A Hawley staffer will talk about the US Constitution and freedom of religion to attack a Muslim politician, and sing a completely different tune when it comes to Christian fundamentalists.
Again, the "everybody clapped" nature of this, followed by Tommy walking off in shame, made me think that he was a plant.
But no. This was a real-life rightoid, getting exposed as the hateful, hypocritical bigot that he is in front of the entire world.
Abdul El-Sayed's rise in American politics has made me a lot more optimistic about our future.
It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Something to be aware of when encountering viral French riot videos online. Especially when loaded with right wing narratives and talking points, as they are on X. Make note of the accounts pushing this campaign for future review.
Russian intelligence services have a documented history of exploiting civil unrest to destabilize governments, deepen political divisions and undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
Warnings of possible Russian hybrid attacks came days and weeks ahead of protests in France. Large demonstrations provide opportunities for sabotage, provocations and other forms of interference to take place amid existing unrest, making it harder for authorities to distinguish politically motivated violence from coordinated foreign operations.
Riots and violent confrontations can be exploited to increase tensions between demonstrators and police. A single violent incident can trigger a wider confrontation, provoke a heavy police response and undermine public support for otherwise peaceful demonstrations. Russian operatives do not need to control a protest movement to exploit it.
Kremlin-linked influence networks can then circulate selective footage, misleading claims and fabricated accounts of the violence. The same incident can be presented to different audiences in contradictory ways: protesters are portrayed as violent extremists, while police and government officials are accused of authoritarian repression. Both narratives encourage hostility and distrust.
This is where the GRU and Russia's wider influence apparatus become relevant. Russian military intelligence has been implicated in sabotage and other covert operations across Europe, while Kremlin-linked online networks have conducted coordinated campaigns to manipulate political debate. Physical disruption and online amplification can reinforce each other, although evidence is needed to establish whether they are coordinated in any particular incident.
The timing of warnings before major demonstrations matters because authorities must prepare for the possibility of deliberate interference without treating legitimate protesters as suspects. Provocateurs can take advantage of crowded streets, existing tensions and the presence of large numbers of police officers. Any resulting violence may initially be attributed to protesters, regardless of who was responsible.
Prolonged unrest also strains policing resources, consumes government attention and diverts political debate from other issues, including France's military and diplomatic support for Ukraine.
Images of burning vehicles, street clashes and damaged infrastructure can be circulated internationally to portray France and its European allies as unstable. These images are particularly useful to Russian propaganda when presented without context or when isolated incidents are made to appear representative of an entire protest movement.
Russia does not need to organise demonstrations to benefit from them. It can exploit legitimate grievances, amplify isolated violence and encourage opposing groups to blame one another.
The protests in France may have entirely legitimate causes. That does not prevent Russian intelligence services from attempting to exploit them. But warnings of possible hybrid attacks are not, by themselves, evidence that Russian operatives have infiltrated the demonstrations or caused specific incidents.
🇺🇸🇺🇦 Texas Democratic nominee for Senate James Talarico on Ukraine:
We need to strengthen Ukraine. We need to strengthen our NATO allies as they stand up to Russian aggression so we don't have to.
In some ways, I see this as a cost-saving measure. If we can stop this aggression, if we can stop Putin in Ukraine, then we're not going to have to stop him elsewhere.
NEW: North Korea conducted two ballistic missile launch tests on October 12 and may have tested its short-range ballistic missile’s ability to follow quasi-ballistic trajectories, which complicate missile detection and interception. North Korea could use these missiles to strike critical chokepoints and isolate the frontline during an inter-Korean conflict. (1/2)
Other Key Takeaway:
The Lee Jae Myung administration’s response to the September 21 explosion of a North Korean landmine in the Demilitarized Zone and the subsequent injury of South Korean soldiers is being widely criticized in South Korea and may contribute to a further decline in Lee’s approval ratings. The Lee administration has thus far not finalized any countermeasures against North Korea for the incident, likely due to internal divisions within the administration.
